Like I said above, I've never worked at Tesco. But I know when I did work in a supermarket, I was constantly trying my best for the customers. I'd never have said anything like that to them. I had a lot of customers comment on how smiley I was and said it makes a nice change.~
I just can't believe someone is complaining about this when they should know how hard it is to work out how old people are.

imo the policy is wrong and the implementation shocking.i would have thought that you would be more on my side as the treatment i recieved made shop staff look incapable of acting with discretion choosing instead to humiliate customers and make a scene. sounds like you were one of the better ones, like i was.

but there are lessons here for every store, they should not have done any of what they did, surely if this happened at m and s it would have been dealt with seriously and that staff would have been retrained
things arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back then ;)
BH is my best mate too, its ok :)

I trust BH even if he's from Manchester.. ;)

I had a similar problem. Went to local Tesco and had about £40 of food etc. We had picked up a small £2 bottle of red wine (I was making Lasagne) and went to the checkout. OH was paying for the goods but I was asked for ID. Now usually I don't mind, as I don't look my age (I'm 28 but everyone always puts me at about 19 :j) however I don't expect to get asked for ID for stuff I'm not buying, and because I wasn't buying I didn't take any ID with me. As a result they refused to serve OH, even though they didn't want ID from him. He told them to stick it and we went to Asda.

HOWEVER if I go through the self service checkout with a half decent bottle of wine (I'm partial to the Hardy's Crest Rose but only buy it when it's half price at a fiver :money:), hand it to the member of staff and ask them to remove the security tag I have no problems.

I can understand that they wish to appear responsible but this is ridiculous. By checking ID with the person paying for the goods they have fulfilled their legal requirement. It is then up to the conscience of the person buying the alcohol to decide if they will give it to a minor, I for example have refused to if I suspect that they might be underage. Tesco are just p*ssing the customers off.

Perfectly put, for all the Staff know, I could be purchasing for some kids outside the supermarket, or are they also going to say "no" just in case they suspect I intend to do just that also.

Where does it no longer become Tesco's problem? what if I were to hand it to some louts outside, does it then become the responsibility of the purchaser?

Not much different to someone purchasing a bottle of wine with their 3 month old baby in a buggy that has the misfortune of "being there".

It isn't so much the asking of I.D., its the attitude they give out when doing it that stinks, Especially if I.D is offered, this policy of "it might be for someone else" is just plain ridiculous, I don't know why Tesco don't just do away with selling alcohol...................Oh yes, the profits, almost forgot.

Ok so everyone is complaining about Tesco refusing to sell them alcohol. But think about it - Tesco are the ones losing out if you don't buy the product. Why would they do it unless they really believed there was a chance they might be fined? People are acting like they do it just to annoy customers, but they're the ones losing out on a sale.

I don't think they do it just to annoy their customers - it's just their attitude when they are carrying out this policy.

Mind you, in my experience, some Tesco staff seem to have a general attitude problem anyway.

If anyone is caught passing on acohol on to anyone under the age of 18 they will be liable to prosecution by the Police , it will of course not be any responsibility of the shop.

I'm another one been through the same thing at Tesco. Trolley full of family goods, wedding ring on, engagement ring on, credit card ready to pay. Was asked for ID so I said "there's my credit card, I'm 31 years old and here is my 9 year old son (he was stood with me the whole time), what more ID do you need unless he is the flippin' immaculate conception." He scanned the bottles sharpish.

Just a little bit more common sense is needed.

Ergo it is the sole responsibility of the purchaser who HAS I.D, not the shop he or she is purchasing it from, so this "Your partner has no I.D. So I cant serve you", is rendered pointless.
