I believe some of the stores themselves will send in test purchases that are over 18 but under 21/25 to ensure that think 21/25 is being applied correctly. So even if I pretty sure your over 18, if I think you look under 21 (Sainsburys where I work doesn't switch to Think 25 until Sept) I'm going to ask you for ID, and then only accept the ID I am told I can accept.

The legal age for purchasing alcohol is 18 not 21 or 25.
While we are at it, lets halt this nonsense of a till operator getting a criminal record if they sell to someone underage.Yes it is law, but the underage bit is 18, not 25, and an operator is not going to be prosecuted if they sell alcohol to a nineteen year old.

I.D can be forged.Yesterday I saw a National Insurance card used by illegal immigrants that was so perfect, the only way to spot it was wrong, was to look at the downstokes on the letters y and p. which were a fraction of a millimeter shorter than the genuine typeface.

I know you can't get prosecuted for serving someone over 18 but under 21/25 but they can make your life awkward - retraining, disaplinaries etc.

I did find a website where they recruited people to be test purchases for Challenge 21 but I can't find it now. This wasn't the trading standards test purchases, it was an company and you had to be over 18 to apply for it and I guess they wanted you to look under 21/25.

    Nice.

Not only have you !!!!ed-off 95% of Tesco workers reading this, you haven't given any specifics, and you use offensive words such as "retards".

You should be grateful that you obviously look young for your age and try and not alienate your audience.

    Thats exactly my thoughts.
People who use those kind of words are actually the ones the word was invented for.

I'm also 28 (nearly 29!!) and I'm always extremely flattered to be asked for ID. It means I obviously still look very young and yes, they do always apologise for asking when they see how old I actually am. But it's really no bother, it takes a couple of seconds to dig out your ID and then you're on your merry way, feeling a little bit better about yourself in the process! (And each time I've been asked it's been in Tesco's - never had any problems with rude staff at all).

I'm with Marleyboy - people aren't understanding what the problem is. Like the majority of people I'm more than happy to produce ID at the tills WHEN I'M PAYING. What I don't expect to happen is for the OH to get service refused based on MY lack of ID when HE is paying, especially because they weren't asking him for any. What next? Will they ask his 18-month old to produce her ID then refuse him alcohol because he might use it to lace her morning milk???

I think you're getting confused with another thread on here. That's not what the OP was saying at all.

I think you will find emma18181 is referring to my post, which IS relevant to the thread regarding I.D. for accompanying persons. She has a valid point. It is fair enough to ask the person buying alcohol or tobacco for I.D. but to then demand I.D. from anyone who is accompanying them (Tesco policy) is just plain stupid.

If as been said already, it is the customer buying alcohol and NOT the cashier, who bears the responsibility of prosecution should they then pass it on to minors, there should be no reason NOT to sell the customer with relevant I.D. the product.

this accompanying person being Id'd bit is kinda annoying me now.
i work in a retail environment (not tesco nor any other big supermarket but a large chain none the less). I had 2 young guys in buying beer at the weekend, they were both looking and deciding which one to go for, they both came up to the till, one of them was paying, I id'd them both and both quite happily provided it. the reson for this is both of them would be drinking it, and shop assistants have full right to refuse sale if they suspect it is being bought for someone underage.
I have had a situation where two police officers walked into the store I was supervising at the time, they handed me an ID, they had discovered it was fake and challenged a load of underage kids with alcohol. It was not me who checked the ID, it was one of my staff, and luckily for him the police did not take any action, just advised in future to be more vigilant. Now whats to say someone of age to buy alcohol goes into a shop buying for someone underage...they then get tackled by police later that day/evening and tell them where the alcohol came from...guess who is in the firing line?!
A different store and a different assistant about a year ago sold a lottery ticket to a young girl. Two minutes later in walks the Camelot rep. this girl is under 16, you have just failed a test purchase. Even the store manager was not convinced the girl looked under 16, but the assistant in question got suspended for a week followed by a final written warning, having never had any disciplinary action before.

All this attitude about being asked for ID when you are older than legal age is rubbish, you know how old you are, sometimes its hard for others to tell. It may be easy for someone your own age to tell, but relatively difficult for someone younger/older. Stop giving shop assistants hassle for doing their job, how would you like it if I came into your place of work and got angry at you for following the rules you've been given?

The purchaser of course, ultimately if they bought it using their own I.D. The same would apply to someone going into a store and purchasing the item for the gang of kids hanging outside the shop asking every Tom, !!!!!! & Harry if they would go into the shop for them.

I mean where do you draw the line on it, at what point do you allow a purchase, can a woman pushing a buggy with her child in, legally buy alcohol? can the bloke with his teenage Son buy himself a bottle? at what age does the accompanying person who ISNT purchasing a bottle have to be, for you to be satisfied that the purchase is legal?

Fake I.D. is a completely different issue to an authentic I.D. As is looking under the legal age. If I at 39yrs old, go into a store to buy alcohol, using my legit I.D. as proof of my age, do I have to make sure that anyone who is shopping with me, also has I.D., that they are also over 18 and that nobody is lingering outside the store or near to me, who might be underage?

From what I can see in the way of signposts, the sign at the store says that "I" must be able to prove "MY" age, not somebody else's.

Maybe changing such signs to include members of the general public, in, around or near me will also need to prove I.D.
