What about some sort of fridge cake? You could also make rice krisipe chocolate buns by melting the chocolate in the microwave? Do you have a friendly neighbour you could ask to borrow their oven in return for some home baked goodies or offer to pay for the electric or babysit or something? My neighbour has been using my washing machine for about 5 months now - although i wish she would hurry up and get hers fixed....

It's not very often that I venture in this part of the forum but I visited a few time this week and really enjoyed the threads, so I thought that this was the best place to put mine.

My oven broke a couple of weeks ago, and for several reasons, one being that I'm not going to get myself in debt again after finally winning my battle to be debt free, I'm not going to replace it. Well, not yet. Not until I have saved enough money to get a new kitchen as the one I have at the moment is definitely very ancient!
In the meantime, I may buy a mini-oven, but would really prefer to be able to cope for the next 12-18 months.

Thankfully (and touch wood lol) I can cook stuff on the hob. I also have a microwave which is ok for baked potatoes, and re-heating food. I also have a slow cooker in which I have made lasagna (surprisingly nice!) and cooked a whole chicken (very moist).

    But...

... What do I do about my love of baking cakes?

    So, life without an oven?

I was ovenless for about 2 months and baked cakes in the microwave. I can't find it at the mo, but there is a thread out there which someone pointed me towards.
It'll not be the same as in the oven, but better than nothing.

(he points to some plastic cows on the table) are very small; those (pointing at some cows out of the window) are far away...

Thanks Rosie, I'm always up for a challenge anyway so I'll try some of those recipes. Microwave chocolate brownies sound really interesting :D

I'm off to read up on recipes for my slow cooker. It's really under-used!

We moved into this house at Christmas and there was no oven on the inventory. On asking, it turned out the door had fallen off ages ago so he was just going to bin it, but as the hobs still worked we asked him if he'd mind leaving it. The grill/top oven was supposed to work too but we never figured it out so within a couple of days we popped to Argos and bought a combination microwave which has been fab. Used it for 6 months now (I think to the day, actually!) and use it on an almost daily basis. From chilli to jacket potatoes (fab with the grill & oven combined) to full roast dinners (for two - it's a squeeze but just about fit everything in with careful juggling), it does cakes well too (though I need to remember it's a powerful little thing, cooks much hotter/better than the oven at the old house!). I think I may be tempted to still use it a lot when we eventually get an oven, I just would like to get the real thing at some point as it's a bit of a pain when we have guests round (tend to stick to meals I can prepare in the slow cooker or on the hobs) and also when I need to use the microwave as we don't have a seperate one - have to carefully time everything and wrap thing in tin foil to keep warm while I microwave the last few bits.

krlyr, I used to have a convection oven microwave, many moons ago but for some reasons when I bought my new one in November, I decided to just get a microwave. Actually, I think when my dd moves out, she will take it with her as I rarely use it, but her and bf use it a lot.

My kitchen is very small so I'm used to struggling with everything from the lack of storage space to, well just the lack of space! 2 people and it's crowded lol! So this is an inconvenience but not a huge one for the moment.

I have no oven. It went about ten years ago!!!
I have a gas hob, two microwaves. (A very small one we take camping) and a 20 year old larger one.
    Also a slow cooker.
We have a Lidl small table top electric oven.
The reason for having no oven is that the space for the oven is too small with the fridge-freezer on the same wall with the fitted cupboards.
Everything is fine bar a turkey but we don't like turkey anyway!

Lidl have the oven at the mement under £30... have a look

I've been without an oven for so long now I've forgotten how long it actually is - may well be near enough a year, :o I have a pressure cooker as well as the microwave, and still have the hob & grill.

The only things I've really missed being able to cook are pies, oven chips, and breaded fish. :p

"Roast" chicken cooked in the pressure cooker has been so juicy and delicious, the only thing you don't get is edible skin, but we never used to eat it anyway.
A waist is a terrible thing to mind.
