Thanks so much, i just couldnt think pass pasta / mash / omellettes!

I think i just miss roasts! And home made cakes.

I know I missed those when we had the kitchen done - for a non oven roast how about whole chicken in the slow cooker, sauted pots (closest to roast I cant think of) and veg. Or some pan fried chicken thighs so you get nice crispy skin?

I reckon crockpot blog might even have some baking sc recipes....

not quite substitutes, but for cakes, steamed puddings? for roasts, braised brisket in the slow cooker might be near enough!

No microwave, blew up 2 days after the oven!
  • Ooh, I love this thread! Me and my oh are in a similar position. Our oven gave up around 4 months ago but we still have a working hob. I'm loath to get a new cooker as hopefully we'll be getting a new kitchen in the next year or so and I'd be looking to get a built in oven. Was thinking about renting a cooker but to be honest now it is summer, we wouldn't use the oven much anyway. The only things I miss are the ability to cook pizza, cakes and roasts. Too hot to eat a full roast dinner in the summer anyway.

I've found we've been using our George Foreman a lot more and now the weather is nice, our bbq.

Great tips about cooking a chicken in a slow cooker. I didn't think of that. I had a slow cooker given to me for Christmas but have never used it so that is something to consider!

I really miss easy dinners, pizza or fish fingers.

Thing is since not having an oven both DS and I have put on a little weight!

But when i think about what i used the oven for it was junk like fish fingers / pizza etc?

    Confused!

I've got a table top halogen oven which I now do most of my roasting, baking and grilling in it.

Love it ! Cheaper and quicker than doing the equivalent in the main oven and a lot easier to clean.

Ideal backup for a main oven or if you need extra capacity to cater for lots of people e.g.xmas.

Got mine from Asda for just under £50, but JML (the manufacturers) have them on offer at their website for only £29.95 at the moment.
