Thanks everyone. My brain just went completely blank and all I could think of was soup or bolognaise. lol. I do have a slow cooker, and it'll be getting a good work out next week, but this week I just have to manage with the shopping I have, some of which seems to be oven cook only. Will figure something out. Thanks for all the replies! :A:A:A

my cooker died :( and I'm not gonna have an oven for the foreseeable future and really need some ideas for cheap meals/baking esp with the kids due to break up for the hols soon.
I normally do a lot of baking and not being able to do so has added a massive increase to my food budget and I really need to get it back under control.

I managed to get a cheap double ring worktop cooker thing and ive got a microwave

appologies if this is the wrong forum

    any suggestions/advice appreciated

    thanks

Casseroles can be done on the hob. As can pasta meals.
Depending on your microwave, some can cook meats. Mine can roast!
Rice can be done on the hob, so that's paella, risotto etc.

For things like waffles I have toasted them before and used toaster bags for fish fingers and smiley faces for he kids.

    Hope that helps.

You can make buns in the microwave. Follow your normal recipe and cook in the microwave until a skewer comes out clean when you poke them. Do be aware though they dont go brown. I do sponge cakes in the microwave in a glass dish and then sandwich them with jam or serve with custard... mmmm!

You can do pizza etc in a heavy lidded pan on the hob.

Have you been on freecycle or your local facebook sale page to see if someone has a cheap or free cooker? You can always put a want on and offer to to pass it on when you get your new one.

Mandco - where are you? Try freecycle or ask friends for a spare if they have something like that? Just a thought.
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.

    I'm in a similar position at the moment, we have some microwave recipes here as well as some useful links to other threads;

I've put this recipe on next week's meal plan

if you google microwave recipes you'll find loads :)

In terms of goodies for the kids, you could make a broken biscuit chocolate cake - just need hob and then let it set at room temp. Can also do sponge cakes in the microwave.

If you have a local library you can look for a student cook book as they often have recipes broken down in sections depending upon what equipment they require.

Another idea is to look at camping recipes as these are often based around one or two hob burners. If you have a pressure cooker or can borrow one you can cook a full meal including a full chicken in one go then.

If you live in Wales - I'm not sure - there's a fab place called Too Good to Waste that have cookers for about the £60-£100 mark. It's a huge second-hand furniture warehouse.
Hope this helps for other peeps as well if you're stuck....
