Indeed, I think my mother was over 30 before she had an oven, having grown up in a house where there was no oven - and if you wanted something baking you made it and carried it down to the local bakehouse.
The mini oven you've got is just as good as a full-sized oven for most things - so you probably won't even miss a full-sized oven, unless you want to cook a full Sunday roast with meat, Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes etc for a family of 4 every weekend!
I also think they're safer because they use the timer to operate.
I haven't got a mini-oven yet PasturesNew but thank you very much for your post as it is making me think! I hadn't thought about the safety aspect of a large oven versus a mini-oven. I'd only thought of it in terms of using less energy and therefore spending less money! I'm still thinking about a halogen oven but have not decided which would be best of the two.
And I'm considering whether to bother really as by the end of this year, I should be living alone so it might be just as well to wait until I can afford to get the kitchen done out.LBM: August 2006 £12,568.49 - DFD 22nd March 2012

Hob is fine as is grill. However no microwave. Never needed one. Dont want to spend money on anything so hobbing it it is.. Hopefully the sun will come out and we can use BBQ!
Change the element....its surprisingly cheap and easy. I fixed our cooker for £9.99 and Im not a diy enthusiast. Just needed a screw driver a spanner and a how yo do it video of YouTube. Lol.xLBM 2008 [STRIKE]£45,091.23[/STRIKE] eek: now £7889:T Debt free date 18/07/20180 -
You can have bread with soup - flatbreads cooked in a pan.
I survived with no oven for about 3 years. I had one electric element ring which was snaffled from a cupboard at work and had been used to heat wax so it stunk every time it was used.
I also had a microwave.
I got very good at one pot meals!
Even the pan I cooked them in had been given to me in a colleague's clear out.If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0 -
Thanks Sambucus Nigra. I'm off to find a recipe.
I really appreciate all the posts telling me how long people have coped without an oven. Apart from making me sure I can do this, it also makes me feel better about my decision to try and cope without an oven.
Learningtobudget, I would love to be able to repair the oven, but I think it is probably something like 20 years old. I might still look into it though, in the spirit of "make do and mend", and because I am a diy enthusiast (albeit a dormant one at the moment!).LBM: August 2006 £12,568.49 - DFD 22nd March 2012

We have an oven but since buying a combi microwave I have never used it! Cook everything in the convection setting of the microwave, or the grill setting and use the hob of the cooker - the oven is great for storing tins in!0

I've got such a bad short term memory that I wouldn't even contemplate an oven or hob. A George Forman grill (brilliant thermostat which means that the house doesn't burn down even if I leave food in overnight), and a microwave which also (like all microwaves) turns itself off when done, does me nicely.DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS ANIMALS DIE. My microwave will start beeping if you don't get the food out of it quick enough! Mighty annoying at times!LBM: August 2006 £12,568.49 - DFD 22nd March 2012

Hello,
My oven is goosed. I have needed an entire new kitchen since we bought this house 2 years ago. I'm not going to replace the oven until I get a new kitchen installed so in the meantime I'm using my hobs, my microwave and my slow cooker.
Any good meal suggestions please? We are family of four, meat eaters
Many thanks0
