we bought a halogen oven (£30 from aldi about 6 months ago) and I believe you can bake cakes in those with great success as they act like a mini fan oven and get up to temperature really quickly and have a timer on them - plus you can see in easily and all the time as they are glass
it might be worth asking on your local freecycle/freegle site if anyone is getting rid of an oven - we'll be offering ours there in the autumn when our refit is finished - like you I didnt want to buy a decent one until we had the kitchen replaced but I caved and bought a cheap one about a year ago - its not great tho sadly, but its been ok for heating things through, but cant wait til I get the new one!Blah0 -

Pink-winged, after posting last night I had a look at some of the sticky and found some interesting recipes. I have, right at the moment, a garlic butter chicken cooking in my slow cooker. Smells heavenly!
M.E. and Kitschkitty, you are giving me hope that I can last a while without an oven. Thanks for that.
runbeforeIcanwalk, exactly the same with me. The grill still works but I'm now using the oven as storage for cake tins etc, so it's a bit a nuisance emptying it every time I want to use it.
One of my friends did suggest a halogen oven. She has one in her caravan apparently. I know nothing about them so will do some research this weekend. Thanks for the suggestion.
Beki, you can do lots of things like lasagna, pasta bakes, pates, baked potatoes, casseroles and you can bake cakes! do you have a microwave?LBM: August 2006 £12,568.49 - DFD 22nd March 2012

It depends what you want to bake, but Lakeland were flogging these electric gizmos to 'bake' cupcakes in at Christmas. They look a bit like a breville - you put the cakes into the holes and shut the top down. I think you can get them elsewhere and for cheaper too. Certainly there are loads of puds and upsidedown cakes that are easy to do in the microwave.I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off

Oh, I know what you mean. Aldi are selling some for £9.99. http://www.aldi.co.uk/uk/html/offers/special_buys3_25345.htm Too gadgety for me, but I like this:http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0057WJ4G2/ref=s9_simh_gw_p79_d0_g79_i2?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=1EP2TPQKNKE56CTQ8TFC&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=467128533&pf_rd_i=468294 (having started my research on halogen ovens). It feels a bit weird to call it an oven though!LBM: August 2006 £12,568.49 - DFD 22nd March 2012

Well, the garlic and butter chicken in the slow cooker was delicious and there was a lot of cooking stock so I poured it in a jug, left it in the fridge overnight, removed the fat and now I have a soup in the slowcooker: added lots of vegetables and some lentils to it. Shame I can't bake some bread to go with it

Ovens in houses are a fairly new thing, for everybody to expect to have one. Indeed, I think my mother was over 30 before she had an oven, having grown up in a house where there was no oven - and if you wanted something baking you made it and carried it down to the local bakehouse.
The mini oven you've got is just as good as a full-sized oven for most things - so you probably won't even miss a full-sized oven, unless you want to cook a full Sunday roast with meat, Yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes etc for a family of 4 every weekend!
I also think they're safer because they use the timer to operate.0
