Meal ideas with no oven? :)

My oven blew up on new years day and i have to wait 14 days for a man in a van to arrive.

Have any of you got cakes and things that can be made in the microwave?

I would really like it if you could post recipe for my children to try as they are really missing cooking.

Thank you in advance:T

I usually mix some sliced apple, raisins and a little cinnamon together then add some microwave sponge mix on top then cook in the microwave, my boys love it.

  • Hello
We're in the middle of having an extension built for us and the builder is about to tell us that we can't use the kitchen for about three weeks.

I'm planning on setting up the fridge, freezer, microwave, toaster and kettle in the back room and feeding a family of four from these.

Breakfast should be easy: just our usual cereal, milk and toast.
The girls take pack lunch to school and me and my husband can take lunches to work, or buy lunches at the canteen.

My major concern is eating together in the evening. I've bought a steamer pot that gets used in the microwave, so I should be ok with cooking rice, potato, vegetables etc, but I've never cooked meat in the microwave. Also our two girls are fussy eaters and refuse to touch casseroles and stews. If the weather was less chilly we could stick to salads!

A friend is hunting out a grilling machine, and plenty of people have invited us round for the evening. But I'm loathed to buy takeaways, microwave meals, spend a fortune at restaurants etc.

Do you have any ideas on meals we can cook with just a microwave, kettle and toaster? Or what could I cook to freeze now and reheat in the microwave later?

    Thanks!

Crikey that is a challenge. Ordinarily I'd suggest stocking your freezer up with home made stews, casseroles but as you say your children aren't keen.

Jacket potatoes are good in the microwave and I'm sure you can get some protein from tuna or cheese and ham toppings.
How about stocking up the freezer with bolognaise (fresh pasta microwaves just fine), home made soups (fresh bread to dunk), chilli con carne (not too spicy for the children/ good for rice or jacket spuds). Pasat bakes also freeze and microwave reasonably well, slightly more squishy pasta after defrosting and microwaving though.
  • hopefully your friend can find you the grill machine, or see if someone else has one you can borrow, or else you could buy one, argos cheapest one is £12.99 http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Browse/ID69/10198452/c_1/1|category_root|Kitchen+and+laundry|10198386/c_2/2|cat_10198386|Small+kitchen+appliances|10198449/c_3/3|cat_10198449|Health+grills|10198452.htm

a really good investment - you can use it to cook chicken breasts, salmon steaks / fillets, sausages, bacon, pork loin, gammon or even paninis! - so may be worth buying one of your own - I love using mine.

What about tuna pasta one night, you can heat up frankfurters in microwave - so hot dags or in pasta / rice one night .

I would have thought the difficult thing will be getting everything hot at the same time - at least if you had the grill then you can cook veg in micro while keeping carbs hot and the meat / fish on the grill.

I'll have a think what we did when our kitchen was being done - only we were only out of action for a week - and we did have some takeaways.

Oh quick last thought - what about a cooked chicken / pieces from the supermarket - grab on way home from work - someone else sticks carbs in micro - then hot chick with when you get home.

You can cook cous cous with just a kettle.

    Boil the water.
Pour some cous cous into a saucepan.
    Pour on boiling water.
    Add a knob of butter.
    Cover.

    Eat in 5 minutes.

  • Have you, or anyone you know, got a spare camping stove?

You could use it to cook food on, so could fry meat/eggs/burgers etc?

    Good luck!

Just had an extra thought. Yes it cold outside but wrap up warm and get the barbeque fired up. One with a lid would help you to cook meat. I thought of this whilst reading a christmas preparation post... thinking it's always me in our family that gets booted outside on Christmas day to tend to the barbeque for roasted chesnuts!
