I have just received a telephone call on my home BT Landline from someone (female) with a heavy Indian accent saying that she is from supportonclick.com and that she thinks that I may be having problems with my PC. She said she was speaking from Kolkata (Calcutta) India.

I am concerned on how she should get my telephone number (realised I did not ask her if she had got my name). She said she did not know my email address or URL.

It is spooky for me as I have just come back from India where I was touring for just under 3 weeks and whilst there had a bag, containing my Palm PDA, stolen. I had my address, phone number etc in it, along with other personal information. My son is for another 2 weeks currently touring in Rajastan before returning to Delhi and then home.

I did not give this person any information and terminated the call.

How did she get my number?

I googled supportonclic.com and found, from several sources, it was a scam

Regards

I had a call last Saturday morning from a woman with a very strong Indian accent who said her name was Jennifer. I think I did very well not to laugh out loud and held on to hear her tell me that my PC is running slow and she could help speed it up. I had a some time to spare and I fancied a bit of sport so I let her go on for a while then I asked which company she represented. Surprise, surprise. It was Comantra. I didn't lie when I said I had to go out, and she offered to ring me back today (Monday) as they don't work on Sundays. The number that came up on caller display was a mobile which I rang back after setting my phone not to disclose my number. It wasn't answered but someone calling himself Ricky invited me to leave a message. I decided not to as I had no intention of risking my mobile number getting widely known. I had another call from the same number today but my wife was slow to the phone and they rang off and haven't called back yet. Sadly, I imagine there are lots of people who may fall for this sort of rubbish. Any suggestions for where else to report them please?

just had a call and humoured them for a bit im in IT and new it was BS ,they sent me to the event veiwer via the run box on my pc then tried to worry me when there were errors in there (these are usual) and then sent me to the support site i ended the fun at the second 123 site though as he gave me a password to enter ,id say that would allow the backdoor exploit,i grilled them that most households would have windows and it was a cold call and i hadnt requested help, wouldnt tell me where they got my number just they had a research and development dept.then after maybe 10 mins i told him i was an IT tech and could sort it myself if i had issues ,he wasnt too pleased that i wasted his time,i asked if his PC was ok and if i could help him out lol turned the tables a bit he was saying no im not interested thanks thankyou goodbye sir ,goodbye sir, then i spelt out a website in the manner he did to me, T H I S I S A S C A M .C O M ,OK sir thankyou sir lol ,,bye

Did you type that on a mobile phone? I hope so as that's how it reads. Awful.

I wouldn't recommend people play games with these fraudsters. Telephony is not a toy.
• I was taken in by Supportonclick's dubious tactics. I have to say that their treatment seems to have speeded up my PC and removed some unwanted pop ups but I am concerned about personal security when they can access my PC so easily.
What do you recomend I do?

Never speak to strangers or confirm who you are to anyone unless you phone them or it's the police or another authority at your front door. Install an answering machine and setup caller ID also.

Other than that do a full security scan and make sure your computer is fully up to date.

Free antivirus security www.microsoft.com/security_essentials Only use one antivirus on a PC or laptop.

My dad (just got a pc - not exactly a seasoned pro) got a call from this lot today.

He went through event viewer and seems to have been asked to fire up logmein.....but he stopped short when they mentioned money. Luckilly the number 0203 0513257 and google lead here so I'm not too concerned about access. I also gave them a call.

Panicked me. Morons.

The very first line of the very first post in this exceedingly long thread (I did read a couple of posts when it first appeared and have ignored it since until now) absolutely shouts SCAM
Just had a really weird call from 'Support Onclick' saying they'd spotted we'd just opened a malicious file - & offering support.
If this wasn't just a random cold call that came in at a time when it was vaguely believable then the only way this company could possibly know a file had been opened would be if it were malware that notified them. If that is the case then the frightening bit is that it somehow got the correct phone number (probably a phishing scam).

Now we have either a scammer or a troll trying to justify the company!!

Enough it is way way past time this one was closed off.

• Just had a phonecall from these people this afternoon. They claimed to be from Dell - I bought a new Dell computer last year. I managed to put the phone down after they told me to use the prefetch and inf commands in the "run" box - his "my goodness!" after counting the number of files was a bit OTT.

I didn't hand over any details or any remote controlling of the computer.

• hi i jst had a similar scam pulled on me today, said they were onlinepccare, they put me onto logmein123 i did enter the 6digit passcode & let the person clean me comp up they were on over an hr (my comp is actually very slow at the min & does need fixed) he done that, but while i watched & chatted i realised most of what was done i could of done myself ( & im not very good with technical stuff ) anyway after that was dun the indian (i think) rang me back & started telling me to click on gold memberships then i seen the amount £130 & space for my card details at this point i thought no way (for a start i dont have that sort of money in my bank to spare) i thought if sumone just had control of my comp then they could still be sittin watchin me put my card details in or anything so i said i havnt got the money to pay you today to which he put someone else on they asked how much i could afford & started knocking the price down for me so i said my bank was empty so i couldnt pay anything today then he got quite stroppy sayin i had made an agreement & they'd provided me with a service so i had to pay then said hed put me onto manager so they could go threw terms & conditions (tryin to put frightners on me  asthough id signed a contract with them) at this point i was fed up with them & said if you were going to want paid you should of made it clear from beginning then i basically told him were to go & told him gud luck getting money from me as iv got none then i hung up, thats when i searched & eventually found the scam postings, i am glad i didnt giv bank details, however i am now worried _pale_ that i put the 6digit code in somewere, is this bad, will they have access to my comp now & if they do how can i stop them & sort my computer back out, plz help thanks
