Morning all!
Essexgirl If you are going to the jam factory, try to make time to pop into the Cheap Shop, about 200 yards further up the main street. It is an Aladdin's Cave of anything you could possibly need craft/quilting wise. Also, large stock of stationery, cake decorating items, baskets, artist materials, dolls house stuff. I went in yesterday for a pair of scissors and came out an hour later £54 lighter!!!:j[DFW Nerd club #1142 Proud to be dealing with my debt:TDMP start date April 2012. Tru - sounds like an interesting journey you're on - i think i'm guilty of confusing OS with Flying and will quite often mention things like the WM so thanks for making me think about this.
For me OS is the stuff that those around me consider to be "not quite normal" my dsis confuses using leftovers with child abuse and would not even use the other half of a pepper that she had used the night before - my dds think it's weird that i wash up "rubbish" for recycling. Meal planning is another - my friends think i lack spontaneity and how do i know on monday what the dds will "fancy" on Friday. I'm not sure when children's dietary whims started to determine the family diet - certainly not when i was a kid.
I'm no domestic goddess - my freezer is a jumble of UFOs, the thought of chickens in my garden fills me with horror, I need a week's notice before anyone "pops" round and we've had the half price pizza hut thing 4 times in the last month. On the other hand for the most part i know more or less what the dds are eating and can pronounce all the indredients (apart from celeriac - not sure how you say that), i have limited the amount of chemicals ingested by the girls thanks to the advice here and my house is tidy to a level that i'm confortable with. I love being here where a yellow sticker bonanza is celebrated and not sniffed at and where people wonder aloud about things that quite often tax me - how much vinegar to put in the wash and the like. dd mentioned the other day that her friend thinks we're rich as we go on lots of trips - I wish! i'm an SP working full time and on CTC and WTC - i just prioritise differently - the friend lives on dairylea dunkers and pepsi - dd lives on fridge debris soup and water
Am i OS - yes mostly - prob just a green belt though
Very thought provoking Tru - enjoy your journey
It's peeing down here and we're supposed to be going to the beach today. I was under instructions to wake everyone up early this am but i think i'll just leave them for a bit - wonder what would happen if we ALL went to Hilstep's for the day LOL.I'm going to feed our children non-organic food and with the money saved take them to the zoo - half man half biscuit 20080 -
Hester - hugs
Tru - It's me that says - OS I've put the washing on.
I really struggle with housewifery, and my idea of OS is the idea of a home ran to a good rhythm, with old fashioned or rather tried and tested values. Home made goodies, good meals, comfortable and clean surroundings, thrift, thoughtfulness and love. And some days if I didn't put that I really wouldn't have anything to put. I think what I am wistfully dreaming of is a home where there is a time and a place for everything. That nothing is just bought in, but we consider if we actually need it, and if we can use something else instead or do things a different way. Also, is there a less expensive way of doing things.
And today I have absolutely no idea what I am doing, as I have so many things that need to be done first. I have a Sainsbury delivery arriving, I really want to start getting the kitchen back up to scratch, I want to crack on with the baby sweater now that the baby is actually here and it will soon be too warm for a sweater, and of course I want to play with little bear.Ankh Morpork Sunshine Sanctuary for Sick Dragons - don't let my flame go out!0 -
Just wanted to pop back to send kind thoughts & hugs to Hester today.
And Taplady, sorry to hear of your sad family news - as you say, it's not necessarily because you're close to a person, but the others who it may affect.
Another OS thing - I have now got a lovely collection of the Mr T's cath kidston bags, so I use very few plastic carriers when I go shopping.
And yes, celebrating yellow-stickers!!!

Just been thinking about your question Tru and I am glad that you asked it as it made me think about and realise how much my ways of doing things have changed. I think that I owe a big thank you to you all for all the hints and tips and encouragement:T:T:T"Keep smiling, it makes people wonder what you are up to........"
Dieting ........... is no piece of cake!!!!:D

Phew! Think I've read and caught up with everything!!
Hester - my thoughts are with you today (((hugs)))
Katie - congrats my lovely! Seems like the good news is just what you needed :j
Candygirl - Have you put pics up? congrats!!
No OS today, on a 6.45-9.30/3-10 split at work today which is pretty evil! And in between I'm doing a bit of filming, so if you see a redhead filing her nails on the district line while being filmed that's me :rotfl:Going to try and get some OS done at the weekend though - the uni's closed and i'm not working so I have four days of pottering and studying - I can't wait :T
Gorgeous day today in Kingston town, have a lovely day everybody and ((((((hugs)))))) to anybody who needs one.
oh, just wanted to say - this forum is such an education on parenthood and children! i'm not planning on having kids for quite a few years yet but when I do I'm definitely turning to you guys. :A From what I can gather having kids is scary, frustrating, sleep-depriving, scream-inducing, amazing and beautiful, and I only hope to be as brilliant as you lot when it happens for me. Sorry if I seem a bit soppy today, I just love reading all your posts and you all make me smile!

Goodmorning Everybody...I realize that I just skim along the surface of the thread and don't actully jump in and totally join the community.....confession over...
OS for me is about how far I have come. From being ill and not able to work and my sister paying my mortgage for the first year ( not covered back then until off 39 weeks) having a rather large credit card bill...I bought a new computer which was 0000's.
I learnt that OS was a stable way for me to get back
into the Black, and being on long term benefits to get a routine going, save for Household maintenance, get the best tariff for electricity, gas and telephone. Managing my money and saving for what I want/need.
I am so gratefut to Martin and all the Moneysavers on the whole website...they have taught me so much, and NEVER judged.
OS today? I am having a WARMFRONT Boiler fitted, cooking in the Ramoska, Laundry at 40 degree quickwash, and waiting for delivery of sheets I ordered on the sale form the Duvet & Pillow Warehouse sale.
Thanks for allowing me to be part of OUR community.Today, my BEST is good enough.0 -
Good morning - we had a lovley weekend away. Acton Scott Farm is fascinating - I wanted to bring a Tamworth piglet home with me, but couldn't quite get it to cooperate  It was a bit frustrating, as quite a lot of the places that were filmed are on private land and aren't actually on the farm site. We could see the pigsties that they built from a distance, but I'd really wanted to see Ruth's house and that was nowhere to be seen

Old Style is defined as what we used to do in Domestic Science lessons at school - backing, cooking, preserving, cleaning, craft, handiwork. It's expanded to encompass gardening (though that really fits better on the Greenfingered Board) and livestock keeping. What’s considered OS to you then? Not that I’m nosey or anything
For me, it’s a whole lifestyle thing that includes everything I do - moneysaving (automatic – go OS and you’ll save money), green living, grow-your-own and business (cottage industry stylee), along with the soda crystals and elbow grease :rotfl:
Old Style is also about using modern technology to accomplish Old Style tasks - vaccum cleaners, WMS, BMs - no need to sweep by hand, wash by hand, or knead bread - you can still be Old Style :T
A lot of people say that "true" Old Style" includes helping your neighbours. I'd argue that's Old Fashioned values (that many of us on this board have) but isn't really Old Style
Family and relationship issues are best discussed on the Families board. "Green" issues are best on the Green and Ethical Board, too
I have bare cake and bread tins , so I'm baking this morning, and in the garden this afternoon.
Have a great day, Penny. x:rudolf: Sheep, pigs, hens and bees on our Teesdale smallholding :rudolf:0 -
OS??? I thought I had a vague idea what it was, now I'm not sure
I have been thinking lately though that our grandmothers would not recognise this need to have freezers (never understood the need for more than one, what's that all about
) stuffed to the gunnels with food. And wrinkly old veg from the bottom of the fridge ( probably devoid of any nutrition:rolleyes:) would not have been pressed into service because they would have bought fresh every couple of days or pulled up fresh from the garden. I do realise most would not have had access to a fridge or freezer
Stored veg for the winter would be stored in sand so as not to shrivel.
I shall be trying to grow some veg this year (only a very little) mainly because I got a gift voucher for these people for Christmas
But what happens if you really don't have space, time or skill to grow stuff
I think the thing is everyone takes what they can from it, and leaves what they can't use. To my maternal grandmother that would have been making most of the family clothes, including my grandfather's shirts!! Cleaning from dawn to dusk, and cooking everything the family ate. But she only had homegrown veggies because my grandfather was ace at that and they had an allotment.
I'm rambling so I'll take my leave. I just get more confused the more we try to analyse it:o I'm going to give the garden a much needed weed, and make a sausage in puttanesca sauce dish. Is this OS? You tell me:rotfl:
edited to add, I'm such a slow typist PP slipped in
That makes it clearer, I think:rotfl: You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0
