This discussion is really interesting!
I can't do as much OS as I'd like, and if I'm honest it really has gone down the pan a bit recently - between uni, work and all my extra-curricular projects (that totally makes me sound like I'm still in school :rotfl:) I really do struggly to fit it in. But the things I try and do in general include: only using the tumble dryer for my bedding (can't hang it out to dry at this time of year because I'd end up sneezing all night because it gets covered in pollen ), baking my own bread and cakes (altho I think I'd do more of my own bread if I had a BM, atm I only use yeast free recipes), using up LO food in various guises, using white vinegar to clean instead of an array of products, and fixing clothes instead of buying new ones.
I'd love to do more, especially growing and eating my own veg - that must be so satisfying! - hopefully when I graduate I'll have a bit more time.
Filming went well, back at w*rk now. Glorious day still :j
((((((hugs)))))) to anybody who needs one

Afternoon all,
Had a lovely trip to Dublin Airport with DDIL to pick up her two cats, who flew in from Frankfurt this morning....she hadn't seen them since September and they were so pleased to see us both....made me think of Luca so I ended up having a whinge on the way home.
OS...to me means providing as much in the way of f & V for ourselves as we can, reusing and recycling, being as careful with use of electricity, oil and gas as possible, not buying ready meals or cakes, in short, cutting out waste and making more gifts for friends and relatives. I don't always manage to live this way, but try to every day and I think that is what is important, doing my best when I can so that on bad days there is no guilt if I do very little. The companionship I have found on here has made my life easier, not having time for each other is one of the evils of to-day, at the end of the day people matter, things can be replaced or done without.
Have a good day all....hugs to all in need or want, you especially Hester.

HockeyDuo - congratulations
Popping in for a brief sanity saver, then I am going to have to do something with little bear.
The question about what is OS is funny. I remember visiting some of dear heart's better off relatives and one of them saying in a very snooty voice - well, I suppose you will be making jam next. What could I say - I had a few small pots of gooseberry jam sitting in the cupboard that I had made the previous week. She seemed to imply that I would have reached the absolute depths of life if I had made jam.
I couldn't work out why.
Actually there are three very very good reasons why I do not make jam. One is that mixing my accident prone nature with boiling sugar is not good. Two is that we don't actually grow much in the way of fruit so it is not economical. Three is that we don't actually eat any of the dratted stuff.
And is it OS if you make jam but put it in fancy bought jam jars or, as my late grandmother used to do, beg coffee jars and re-use those. Has anyone seen the gorgeous bottles in Lakeland? If I thought that there was the remotest chance that we would use them I would have a selection.I suppose I could put laundry gloop in them.

Hockeyduo - congratulations - thats brilliant news.
Hi SunnyGirl and Diva hope you are ok:hello:
Home from work for 5 blissful work free days:T:T:T
All we need is good weather now - but forecast is def dodgy(spelling?)
It has been really interesting reading all the differing opinions on here today. (So much so I kept coming on to read them at work and so had to work later to catch up:rolleyes:):rotfl:
I think that as wmf says just coming on the thread makes me think about being more OS. For example - I now think twice before using oven for just 1 thing and it wouldn't have entered my head before! I now try to cook a couple of things at least at the same time!
Hope everyone is having a really good day

Hockeyduo congratulations
this has been one of the most interesting threads i have read. I think OS is close to all our hearts. for me OS is a balance of old style and modern. to enhance our lives living as simply as possible. I think as a working mum cooking from scratch etc is so important knowing what is going into your food, but equally I embrace modern technology and hopefully use it as economically as I can (I could not live without my WM, freezer hoover etc.) however I try not to use my TD and always peg washing out (this wasnt the case before I came to this website I would use all the labour saving things I could:o)
so for me its a balance of both old and new , which I hope will enhance our lives , keep us healthy and give us some time together too .
I thank all my friends on here I have learned so much and certainly I would not be baking and growing veg like I do now0
