Hi, this is the Daily Thread for Wednesday 8 April 2009. This is an 'Over the garden fence' type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!
As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.
When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly, but if not, it's not a problem.
Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two Daily Threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new Daily Thread after they get up in the morning.
Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “Hi everyone, hope you are all well” type start is just as good!
Morning everyone! Hope you're having a good day so far?
I've been awake for about an hour, so have done my Postal survey stuff, looked at my online phone bill (and managed to save £3 a month on my phone bill
) and I'm about to see what else I can do online.....
There's a load of washing in the machine and I'm hoping that Rob McElwee's forecast last night is right for today, as I might be able to get it dry outside. I do like Mr McElwee's forecasts - he tends to say it as it is, with a wee twinkle in his eye!
Got a busy day ahead of me at work, so I should try and get back to sleep, but I've got a sore shoulder that's not comfy and that's probably what's been keeping me awake. Maybe the 2 hours I spent on the phone last night had something to do with it?
DH has got a meeting this evening, so it needs to be a quick meal as it's a speedy turnaround for him. Maybe pasta and something?
It's bin day tomorrow, so need to sort out the bins and do the recycling this evening too.
I hope that the holidays are going well for all those that are off? May your day fly in (though not too quickly, no point in wishing time away!) and you get plenty done with you and yours.
Have a good day folks :j:j

Well done you on your saving :T every little helps
Its gushing down here this morningand really windy now. Dogs arent going to be happy going out in the rain when I get home  , but I refuse to do what my sister does on her Lab and put a coat on them when it rains
Have you tried the Heat pads from the £ shop for your shoulder? I get bad backs (top of back and bottom off neck, where they meet) sometimes, and these really help with that
Well, enjoy your day everyone. Im just doing house work today (MIL coming down) and although im generally clean and tidy, its never up to her standards, so dont know why I bother really :rotfl:I know my spelling is shocking  It is alot better than it used to be though :rotfl:0 -
Morning :hello:
Been awake since 3am
I’ve been looking back over old posts, it’s interesting that some people find OSing easy, some struggle with it sometimes and others fit it in when they canDoing the 'normal' housework is seen as OS by some but not by others  For example: for me, putting the WM on isn't OS, but handwashing is.
What’s considered OS to you then? Not that I’m nosey or anythingFor me, it’s a whole lifestyle thing that includes everything I do - moneysaving (automatic – go OS and you’ll save money), green living, grow-your-own and business (cottage industry stylee), along with the soda crystals and elbow grease :rotfl:
I'm doing a bit of soul-searching at the mo, my GP is helping me. For a while, I've got to look into everything I do, how I handle it, do I actually like it (or is it just habit) and what do I actually want out of life? So there is a reason for all these questions
So today, I’m going to search the shed for old bits of wood that can be made into a card stand. Then sort some new cards out, I’ll need them ready in the next few days – I’ll have to pick up any Easter cards that are leftover at the farm and restock the basket.
Oooh and some of my salad leaves are ready :j so I'll cut them and have them in a ham sandwich for lunchBulletproof0 -
Morning.
A very wet night down here and showers set for the day. Glad I am not an Easter holiday camper!
Managed a fairly unproductive day yesterday. Went to a friends to borrow another incubator so that I can step up production. The 29 I have in at present should hatch in 3 days time. I will start another 36 today.
Back to work today, I thought I had a meeting to go to in Exeter, but got told it was cancelled, which was a good thing as it meant that all opur funding bids for sports stuff at work was accepted.
So we have a good bit of money to spend on fishing this year and so I shall be getting my tackle out far more often.
Well, folks. have a nice day....NO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0 -
Good morning,
Just having my afternoon caffeine fix. Been a lovely sunny day here and I've got all the washing dry. DS2 arrived here at 8am and been feeding his face ever since. Hooked up the Wii onto our TV & been on my bed playing. Gave me his washing & has asked me twice now what's for tea. It's lovely to have him home though.
Been cooking again this morning. Having a family meal here on Good Friday & I've got DGS tomorrow so I wanted to get most of it done. Been doing other riveting things like washing paths, dog & my hair. Separately I might add.
Tru I don't think many people on this thread class using the WM as OS. I think you'll find they are just listing chores that they are doing on that day or need to do. Bit like vacuming, ironing etc. Anyway to your question OS to me is basically living simply. I've done this to varying degrees all my life depending on time & money.
Haribo Have fun at Pinks & don't lead her astray.
Hope you all have a lovely day & <hugs> to those not well. :icotbaske ByeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeDon't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.0 -

I saw a couple posts (only a couple, so your right in that not many people class it as OS) that said 'OS-wise - I've put a load of washing on'. I'm thinking 'what's OS about that?'
Living simply - I think I should take that view  I tend to throw myself into something and end up debating with myself about every little detail and over-complicating things :rolleyes:Bulletproof0 -
Morning peeps
i missed posting yesterday but managed to read the thread. The reason being i was just soooo busy, when i got home from w*rk i spent the afternoon in the garden planting more seeds and moving things around. I repotted some plants in the greenhouse and planted up the first 4 of my square foot gardening pots so i`m a really happy bunny
Candygirl - Congratulations to you and your family, Layla is beautiful.
Ladymay - Congratulations to you too as i see that Mr Potential is now Mr OH
Hester - Hope the funeral goes ok
Diva - Sorry to hear your sad news, some people just arn`t very nice ((((HUGS))))
Idolikeadayoff - Great namewelcome to the daily
Rosyred - My mum spends ages on ancestry - no related royalty here either but plenty of skeletons :rotfl:
Elona - Has DH seen the casserole yet?
Haribo - Have a good trip
Tru - my idea of old styling is trying to make as much from scratch as possible and recycling items into things that can be used for other purposes IYKWIM, i agree with Aussie in that it is living as simply as possible too. Only time constraints dictate how much is possible in a normal day. Sometimes holding down a full time job gets in the way of what needs to be done so some things are compromised.
I made hot cross buns yesterday and cooked half the mix last night - i completely forgot about them and later found burnt shrivelled up shapes in the remoskai cooked the rest this morning and they are perfect. Off to eat one now
Have a good day peeps.
SDPlanning on starting the GC again soon0 -
I suppose we're all different and what some regard as OS others won't.
Personally, I try and use the WM during the night, so that it doesn't cost as much as if I were to use it during the day - as I'm on Economy 7 electric. I don't have the time to do washing by hand. As far as possible though, I try and dry the washing outside or on airers at the back porch, so I don't have to use the tumble drier.
For me, trying to live an OS-lifestyle is about saving money, eating better and being more environmentally friendly. I work full time and I'm studying for a Masters by distance learning, so time is precious at the moment, so I can't do as much OS living as I'd like to. Maybe next year....
I think it's one of the great things about this section of the forum, seeing what everyone does in terms of trying to incorporate being OS into their lives. We're all different, living in different places and have different demands on our time, so it makes for an interesting mix.0 -
Morning everyone
It's freezing here plus wind & rain all night battering everything. I shall check the garden for any damage shortly. No chance of pegging the washing out today  I've got my coffee & am having a quiet half hour before I wake anyone up for college/school. DS1 & DS3 finish today for Easter so no more alarm for a while :T
Well DH & I had a meeting last night with DS1 parents. They have agreed to phone contact once a fortnight & I will phone them with an update weekly. They are still waiting for an apology & gratefulness from him for all 'We've done for him' - I quoting that as it was said  They have decided that they are happy living without their son & he is obviously doing better with us so that's how it'll stay. It's about what I expected so I'm glad I didn't work myself up into a migraine about it:mad: Oh they brought him an Easter egg - nothing for the other 3 - so I'm mad about that. My Dad gave all 4 children £10 each for Easter yesterday & I've already bought matching eggs for them. Oh well.
I'm food shopping today so no doubt will end up with the usual shipping order :rotfl:Dinner this evening is chicken sweet & sour and rice & I'll make some spicy lentil soup for lunch I think - it's certainly feels cold enough here  Have a good day all & I'll catch up later

Morning,
wet & windy here, horrible outside the windowHowever, I have a study day so I haven't got to go out in it...
Was going to try & get the sheets out but unless it brightens up that won't be happening.
Tru, I think Sunnyday & Nessie summed up how I think of OS too. I have the same 'problem' of a full-time job (but it's an unpaid uni work placement), plus my part-time typing 3 evenings at home, plus studying, plus the general taxi-service to teenagers, etc... Hence I also cannot do as much as I would like (9 weeks to go!). One of the key things for me that is more OS is cooking/baking from scratch - not necessarily because it's always cheaper, but I think it's better for us and tastier. I also find the baking part of it very therapeutic and relaxing when I'm stressed. I get great pleasure out of pottering & creating something lovely (and then eating it!). And the recipe ideas on how to stretch food or use up leftovers are also part of it.
I think sometimes (like wot Aussie said), we (I) list our chores within "OS stuff" or there would be no mention of anything domestic on some days!!! I also hope to have time when I finish Uni & have a few weeks off to make some jam, and get either a mini-veg plot or veg tubs going so I can do some "growing my own". I think N9eav's chicken-hatching & keeping is another very OS thing too. And as you are doing today, finding some bits of wood to make something else. As I type all this I'm thinking about what it is that doing OS gives me - and it's a sense of satisfaction in my achievements, even if it's only for small things.
And (finally - I am 'mioliering' a bit here!) caring for (virtual) friends/neighbours & helping them out is OS - it's how we learn from each other. My DD's know how to cook, use the WM (not that they necessarily do) and sort loads, they will wash on a low temp cos it uses less energy (whilst compensating by leaving all their lights/radios on) but I think there are many 'kids' who leave home who don't have a clue how to fend for themselves. So they can come here & learn!!
Edit to say - and good for you Tru for focusing on you, and what you need, and sounds like you have a fantastic doctor.
Anyhow, I have rambled enough - so I will simply send ((((((hugs)))))) to all those needing/wanting for now; I'm off to get another cuppa.Live your life until love is found, or love's gonna get you down" (credit to Mika!)0 -
Morning everyone.
It's blowing a gale outside and a bit nippy.Typical weather when it's a bank holiday coming up.
I promised to go into town to meet a friend or I would'nt venture out at all.
It was supposed to be yesterday but we put it off until today as it was so windy, but it's worse today.
I have no idea how the rest of my day will go or what I'll be making for dinner,I had better raid the freezer before I go out.
I just wanted to bid everyone a good day and hope all goes well for you all.
(((hugs))) to all that need them.
Take care all.........0
