  • Hi Peeps!

Raining and windy here today. I have little bit of a cold starting and the draughty office is not helping it.

Did more packing up last night and realised my car needs an MOT:rolleyes: It's also due to be taxed at the end of the month..will need to hit the savings jar I think. OH has booked it in and will take it along tomorrow, always find garages are less likely to 'fleece' men than women. Although I confess I don't know much about cars at all.

OS today is to do some baking tonight and do a fridge raid for tea. Some 'in house' freecycling later as I am giving my old computer to my sister.
Also trying to keep a spending diary at the moment which is becoming a real eyeopener.

Not been on as been a lttle stressed with house buying malarky. Why do banks take so long to do anything?!

Anyway, hope everyone has a good Wednesday, off to read back now.

    morning ,
    today i will be shopping
and baking if im up to it when i come back, hoping my my mini green house is still here

i also add my daily chores to my list
    tru
    OS means to me
cooking from scratch when i can
being neighborly virtually and caring for others and sharing life experiences ,sharing recipes and tips and encoragement to improve our lives
that is very OS to me.and lacking in a lot of estates/areas.

saving money where i can .mostly on food budget.using my computer to do it and often sending my oh to get the bargins on his way home to save petrol and i can not drive or carry much but i do try

i think that OS is a personal thing

I'm growing radishes and some tomatoes in hanging basket thats what i can manage with space and health and inclination .

i think its great everyone brings a different perspective to the daily .

    best go get started
    have a great day all

I just get more confused the more we try to analyse it:o

Yep me too, that's why I'm in the state I'm in now :rotfl:

Sometimes I think I should post on the Greenfingered board for something, but then what I want to say might not be about garden moneysaving as such, it's about using what's grown to make a meal from scratch so I end up going  :rotfl:

I'm going to stick to my sweeping, etc. because the cash I've saved is going in my pocket :D

Thanks everyone, I'm going to scribble down your thoughts now :D

I meant to say earlier - The reason I included being green as being OS (for me) is that it happened automatically when I started OSing. Everyone would reuse in the olden days :D So I think a lot of topics cross each other naturally, IYSWIM

    Now, where's that notepad? :D

    Good Morning All

its very windy here, sun is shining occasionally through the clouds, Ive got a line full off washing pegged out!

Im off work today, going to Birmingham soon, as DS got more appointments at the Childrens hospital. Ive also booked tomorrow off work, so will make it a nice long week end break. Should be going to a virgin vie party tonight, but will have too see what time I get back!

My sponsors is now up to £180, thats just under 2 weeks. Im really pleased with the donations! My OH has just entered to do a similar walk, its for MEN, but he has to dress in drag!!!

OH enjoyed paintballing on Saturday, and whilst he was there, I visited my dad for a few hours. It was lovely to sit and chat. As some of you are aware of the history, Im sure you'll agree, thats progress for us!

The practise walk got cancelled on Sunday, so we decided to load the bike rack up on the car, and we all went for a bike ride. It was lovely.

Had to phone the WM insurance up this morning. On the last service the engineer advised the drum & bearings are wearing out, and to call again, so he can come back and condemn the appliance, as he reckons it'll cost more to repair. The insurance company will only pay 1/2 towards a replacement. But I guess its better than nothing. Ive also had to buy a new hoover this week, as the dyson has finally died on me! Luckily, I got a Vax hoover with a free carpet cleaner, in the sale from £270 to £154.

Had another session at the gym yesterday. Will go again tomorrow on my day off.

OH has managed to get another gardening job, so thats every saturday taken up now, and more money for us!

Tru - since becoming a member on MSE, and visiting OS often, Ive leant so much from you guys, just with the handy cooking or cleaning tips. Food shopping and budgeting has been the favorite of mine. To cook more homemade meals instead of convenience foods. I have been motivated also in the last couple of years, to do more than I initially would! So thankyou MSE & fellow Old Stylers!!!! We even attempted to grow some veg last year, which was a success! Aswell as having clearouts every so often, stuff for ebay/carboot, or even charity.
Im only able to OS a much as time allows me. With work and other commitments. But we have noticed the difference this has made to our family!
(((hugs))) hester, hope it goes well, as well as funerals go.
(((hugs))) taplady, sorry for your loss

Right, best crack on....Take care All
    Love Emma xx

Hi, I never used to think I was Old Style - I was considered odd / earth mothery because I cooked from scratch, baked, dried my washing on the line, enjoyed being a stay at home mum, tried to eat seasonally and tried to encourage a love of nature and interest in green issues in my kids. Then I discovered this board and that there were other people doing the same sort of things. For me this has made a big difference.

Today my new cooker is arriving so I've been scrubbing and cleaning the area where it is going. My new cooker is stainless steel, can anyone recommend how it ought to be cleaned?

I'm hoping to do a bit of gardening this afternoon, and we want to make an easter egg tree so we'll be doing a bit of craft. I'm really looking forward to next week as we have a Lakeland store opening !!

Hugs to Hester and anyone else who needs them

    Sunnyday

DH has not yet seen the Chasseur casserole pot as it is neatly tucked away in the cupboard under the worktop. He did agree that if I saw something that was useful and good quality that was too good a bargain to miss then I should get it as long as we could afford it.

I don't want to bore him with all the little domestic details - do I?;)

    Tru

I mention putting the WM on because with four DDs the house is like a badly run laundry and I dry clothes and towels on the line or on radiators or airers.

DD and her friend who stayed over had a stack of short fat home made pancakes for breakfast which they seemed to enjoy.

When DH finally gets home I want to suggest we drop the price of our house to £250K and also advertise it in April to see if it helps it sell. Lots of houses in our area are being taken off the market, not having sold or rented so maybe having less competition will help.

Could do with DH driving me to Lidl as I want to have a look at the battery radio on offer this week, it also has an alarm so would be useful if power is interupted.

Tea will be sausages and mash with mushy peas and I may make a big pot of home made soup and do a loaf in the Panny.

    Hester

Good luck with today - your ex sounds like more of a "prince" every time I hear of him!!!!! May he get precisely what he deserves one day.

Hugs to everyone - need to go look after sniffly DD(15)

Goodmorning Everybody...I realize that I just skim along the surface of the thread and don't actully jump in and totally join the community.....confession over...

Yes I'm guilty of that too, only recently found MSE so I'm still finding my way around and getting to recognise names and who's who, so that's my excuse :D

OS to me is trying to live my life in the way i was brought up, with the advantage of modern technology:j. This forum has helped me focus more and go back to cooking from scratch, using up leftovers, thinking about whether I really need something before buying it, recycling, being thrifty and looking out for things at boot sales/Ebay/charity shops before buying new (which is so much more fun:j)
This thread had really made me think so a big thankyou to everyone who takes the time to contribute:A

OS wise today then (well my interpretation):

WM on for second time, washing out on line to dry.
    Finish painting my old cupboard.
Make home made pea and ham soup for lunch using liquid from yesterday's gammon which I cooked in my SC (first time I used it:D).
Baking banana cake using very old black bananas from the fruit bowl.
Making fresh apple juice with my CS juicer bought last week using up wrinkly apples.
Make some jars of Nigella's chilli jam which is just delicious.
List about 20 items on Ebay.
Cooking liver and onions for dinner, with mashed spuds and peas (spuds £1 a large bag in Asda last week).
Work out how to use the meat slicer I won on Ebay last week to slice the gammon I cooked yesterday.

Have a good OS day (or not!). I love this forum and quote it constantly to my family who are slowly getting the message. I treated them to some cans of Coke last week (a rare event, little Easter holiday pressie). My DH said when I brought them home " I don't think they're very MSE are they?" but I replied that as they were BOGOF then I might get away with it:rotfl:

    Morning everybody.
    Hope today goes OK Hester.
Sunnyday-the family skeletons are what makes it so interesting, to me anyway ;)
Regarding OS,Tru,well as someone else said finding these boards was brilliant for me as I no longer felt as 'odd'- I always liked cooking etc, being a sahm and enjoying the school hols and my friends used to comment on this.Once the lads were older I trained as a nursery nurse and enjoyed my job for many years, but stressful things happening in life took their toll(mainly DM,DMIL and DSisIL having serious long term illness ,and their subsequent deaths)My DD was then on his own, never having cooked a meal in his life etc,was lonely and needed lots more attention.
By then we had embarked on a self build project to do this house, and Dad became ill with a return of lung cancer.I decided to give up my job at the end of term,my boss was being unhelpful about time off to go with dad to hospital etc,and wanted me to increase my hours the following term leaving me feeling guilty,so that was it,embarking on an OSish life.
I felt we could manage, although it would be tight, but our food costs dropped,no travel costs, fewer clothes needed,no birthday/leaving collections for colleagues.
We moved into our unfinished house as ours had sold and we needed the money to finish this one off,and I had the time to look after dad.I am so glad I could do that for him.He died a month later in the local hospice.I do think that helping others is for me part of OS,but I now have the luxury of time to do it,it can be time consuming and hard work.I know my family think they eat a lot better now as I make nearly everything from scratch, including bread, jams, chutneys, baking and I enjoy it.Not so keen on the cleaning!
Last year was the first year I grew stuff and I hope to get better at it this time.I am trying to reuse things I prob would have thrown away before and find other uses for it,including food.I get lots of inspiration and motivation from here -even if I don't always post,so thanks tru for making us think about it.(Oops sorry to waffle)
Have a good day all x
