Sleep to Live Beds

hi,
we just put our Bensons Bed frame and sleep to live mattress up yesterday, just to find out that the mattress is 5 cm smaller than the Frame. I called bensons and ask if thats right and they said yes there is supposed to be a 2 inch gap either side so it can expand...??? How heavy do you have to be to expand a very firm mattress for 2 inches either side!? I dont think that is right. So I go back to the Bensons store now and see if I could change the Bedframe (King size) to a Smaller (double) one - becuase then the mattress would fit! And of course get some money back for the obviously too big bedframe!0 -
I went to the Bensons shop directely and expressed our concerns but found them unwilling to help. He said "I cant see any problem with the mattress.... thats why you cant give it back..." Well, it is and stays 4 cm too small for the bed! They even sent me out of the door! (I didnt do anything wrong!) We are going to purchase another mattress! Bed looks great, but highly disappointed with the customer service. :mad:0

A king size bed is 5' x 6'6", and a double is 4'6" x 6'3". So a king size mattress that is 4cm under sized wouldn't fit on a double frame.
As for the mattress expaning 4cm, this is very unlikely, unless the mattress came vacuum packed and rolled up (something usually only done with low quality mattresses.
You could go down the unfit for purpose route, as the mattress doesn't fit the king size base it was designed to.0 -
OK, the latest in this sorry saga is that Bensons say the tolerance on their mattresses is +/- 3cm and that they have to send someone out to measure ours before they will accept it as faulty. (Getting them to do that has been difficult enough!)
We have also spoken to the following bodies:- Trading Standards who advised that unless the mattress is outside "industry standards" then we have no rights to return it for a refund
- Furniture Ombudsman who advised that Bensons is not part of their scheme
- A very helpful woman called Sue at FIRA (Furniture Industry Research Association) who called me back twice but ultimately couldn't give me any "industry standards".
- The National Bed Federation who pointed me to a guidance tolerance page on their bedfed.org.uk website which says the Bristish Standard BS EN 1334:1996 tolerance is +0, -2cm but that there is a procribed method of measurement in the standard.

FIRA is the Ombudsman. So it might be worth asking them to read the relevent section out to you.
Alternatively this is probably the best page to use (without having to pay for it): http://www.bedfed.org.uk/guidelines_tolerances.cfm0 -
meant to add that these type of beds are sold at bensons beds, dont know of anywhere else where they are sold
my advice would be to stay away from these mattress , as they will make your back worse than before , got one payed £1600 , told would solve back problem , no way , small claims court now .0 -
Just to add, the price of these beds is well and truly negotiable. We were down to a choice between a mattress from Dreams or one of these Sleep2Live ones. Bensons ended up knocking almost £300 off the price of a 700 Series and offering to throw in some bedding. We went for the Dreams one in the end as I wasn't quite comfortable - worried that it was all just a marketing gimmick. But, if you want to go for one, definitely haggle! On the other hand Dreams wouldn't knock anything off the mattress we did end up buying, but I wanted it so paid the price anyway.0

Both Dreams and Bensons add a massive mark up (even at their so called sale prices), so Bensons could knock 50% off the price, and still make a huge profit.
Dreams actually give a fake price promise, as amost all of their products have been renamed, so you can't buy them elswhere, which obviously makes their price promise worthless. And if you do manage to find the equivalent mattress, you will probably find that it is half the price of the Dreams sale price.0 -
the bed is the most uncomfortable bed I have had to date. Sealy is a far better bed in my opinion. Just my opinion all I want is a decent nights sleep and sleep to live does not give it too me.0

Wow- having read this entire thread my brain is fried and I havnt a clue what to do!
Edelman, please can you tell me which bed you did buy in the end? (pm me if you dont want to put it on here) I would really appreciate an actual recommendation one thats as comfy as the sleep to live but cheaper would be great. If I can get a good price then Id rather be comfy for 10 years then have a less comfy mattress I have to turn for 20 years. - or a link to this other bed thread people keep talking about as I can find one.
I too find the sleep to live 900 the most comfortable and have tried every bed in both Bensons and furniture village. As a side note there was a sprung mattress I tried today (I assume it could be turned) for £6500!!! it was comfy and makes the sleep to live in Bensons seem like a bargain in comparison. I cant recall the make as soon as I heard the price I walked away but it seems they do make pricey sprung beds that are good quality. It wasnt more comfy then the sleep to live but I felt more confident with it as it seemed like realiable technology if that makes sence- sprung but heavily padded on top.
I couldnt get on with the tempur ones which magazine recommended there was a time delay with the memory foam so when I turned it wouldnt spring up right away.
Im so confused!
...just to add I am very wary of anyones opinion albeit good or bad if this is one of their first posts. Im also aware that many people like to complain on forums but not many brag about how good something is, Id like to be one of the people who does recommend the good- so whatever I buy I will come back on here to update. (fingers crossed itll be good!)0
