  • Hi i read the whole thread and your right there are a couple of reviews and i totally agree with your comment about you tend to only go on to a forum to share a negative experience.

I just wondered if any newbies like me who stumbled across the thread might have an opinion.

Tim, Although i did enjoy your banter with other other forum users (pages 2-9 i think lol :D). i would like to say thanks cause some of your posts were very helpfull and reading in between the lines of some of your vaguer response i looked at other threads on MSE in which you posted and got some usefull advice. I only wish i had found this thread and thought to look on MSE forums prior to putting down the deposit. then i may have considered a pocket sprung latex topped mattress.

As it is now, i think im pretty stuffed :( so will just hope the sleep to live bed i get works for me and continues to work for the 10 plus years i hoped it would. fingers crossed.
  • Hi to all,

following my last post i thought i would update the thread as i have now got my Sleep to Live bed.

A couple of things to start with i bought my bed from Bensons Purley Way and the sales guy was very helpful not pushy and didnt try to sell us the most expensive product in the shop (it was the girlfriend who chose it).

Anyway we ordered the STL 500 series in a double as thats the one she liked and our current frame is a double, but then after paying the deposit we had second thoughts and went back to Bensons and we tried the shop floor one which was kingsize and decided we liked it in that size. This may not be everyone cup of tea but i asked if the shop floor one was to be sold and they said yes and at a 40+% discount of the asking price £1599 (With a bit of bartering i got this down even further but i had to arrange my own collection). Plus we knew exactly what we were getting and the only thing we lost is the 10 year gurantee which when i looked at it has alot of get outs i.e. there is allowed to be a certain amount of sag over time etc etc. but we did get a years structure gurantee. after reading the post about benson i thought they would not let me change the order but i spoke to the same sales guy and his manager and it was all sorted within 10 minutes.

We picked it up on Friday and have had three great nights sleep its the Tan and Green variant and i cannot feel any ridge in the middle. So as it is at the moment i am very happy with the bed and i am nag free as we are no longer on an inflatable mattress. What happens with the mattress in the future and its longevity is anyones guess, all i can do is look after the bed spin the mattress every now and again and keep my fingers crossed. but hey at the moment im happy.

    hope this helps
  • For what it is worth it may be that Sleep to Live Beds were called Kingsdown Beds and are American.

We bought a Kingsdown bed three years ago from Bensons and used the same, or very similar, single bed testing system to see what we should have, graded 1 to 5 with 5 being the firmest and 1 the softest. I was suffering a bad back (long time ago injury) and the system stated that I should have a grade 3 and the Mrs a grade 2 but that the compromise was grade 2 - there was no split beds then with different grades on each side. We ended up with a grade 2 but I do wish we had gone for something harder. The Mrs thinks it is superb, but I think it is too soft and now, after three years my back is getting a lot worse (Drs visit next week) so we are looking at something else - perhaps the hardest grade STL for me and a medium one for the Mrs - or another bed all together, or perhaps just a new mattress to use on the Kingsdown base (sprung with drawers). I might add that the hardest STL does seem to be about mid-range in firmness compared with the average British made mattress.

Couple of things to note. The Kingsdown/STL (if they are the same company which I think they are) mattresses do not have handles on the side making them very difficult to move. They also do not have vents and can get pretty hot during the night. Otherwise ours is in very good order but I don't think that they are worth the price we paid unless you can get a good bit off by haggling.

Finally, for those with bad backs, a really hard mattress may not be the best choice but one with really good support is far more important. To me a springy mattress is dreadful but one that you can sink slightly into is a lot better, so perhaps memory foam over springs is a good bet.
  • In my experience, I wouldn't touch a sleep to live with a barge pole. I have had a 500 series for a year now. It cost £1500 and although felt great in the shop, I have never woken feeling fully refreshed.

It has now started to sag and doesn't feel supported enough. My husband found it great to sleep on at first but is now in agreement with me. On speaking to Benson Beds customer service they weren't even able to tell me what the bed was made of. This should set alarm bells ringing. It really is not worth the money. I am now on the hunt for a new one and I'm sure for £1500 I can buy a lot better. ie no gimmicks.

I am looking at a Back in Action Mirrorform. Anyone had any experience with this?
  • We are very pleased with our StL mattress. My OH broke his back in 2009 (5 weeks in trauma ward, harrington rods to fuse L1-3, anvil injury to spinal caord) he couldnt get comfy on our silentnight mattress. We went on a cruise 3 months later (desperate for a break and they are fantastic for disabled facilities) and we both slept very well. We found that the closest equivilent bed widely available in UK was StL. I wasnt convinced by the sleep simulator but it did confirm that OH was in need of a firmer bed than me. We have a green and blue and you cannot feel the ridge/join. FWIW The hospital advised us not to get a memory foam topper as they would be too soft/warm for OH.
Bensons did tell us that the StL mattresses come up slightly small but we didnt feel it was an issue plus, it has spread a little as it has settled. Overall we are very pleased and would have another one.
If you can keep your head when all around you are losing theirs, its just possible you haven't grasped the situation ;)
  • Hi all, I just purchased my sleep to live bed today and I'll recieve it 21st march so I will update once I receive it. I also bought mine from benson beds, but like others I was not pressured to buy , and tried out many in the shop, before getting this one. Both my husband and I came up needing blue, so both sides are the same. I really hope it will be a good bed, it's such a big purchase and you need to make the right choice.
I've had 2 ops on my back, the mattress I've had for the last 7 yes was a seally non turn, it has been ok up until the last 6 months or so, but it has now given my husband and I a lot of pain when
    waking.
Will update once Ive slept on the sleep to live overnight, finger crossed. . . . .
  • Guess what? I read the good posts, took the negative posts with a pinch of salt and bought a "Sleep to Live" mattress, it is positivly the most expensive mistake I have made for a long time, not only financially but certainly from a health veiw point. I wake up every morning with aches and pains, dispite emailing Bensons for Beds and Sleep to Live telling them of my problems my comments seem to be falling on deaf ears, in fact Bensons even sent me a letter stating that I ordered the wrong mattress and so was at fault, though I could clearly show them that I bought everything on their recommendation, they haven't sent a written apology or even looked into the matter.
I would advise anybody looking at "Sleep to Live" be weary, because my experience is not a good one.

Sorry to hear that Gary. I must admit, when I saw it was your fisrt post I thought we were in for a glowing recommendation ie. spam.

If you get no joy from Bensons - who I have to say have a poor reputation based on what I read on MSE - it may be worth trying a memory foam mattress topper, though that means spending another £50 plus.
  • Me and the Mrs got our mattress two nights ago and so far have not slept well. I told the sales woman in the shop that I am naturally very hot in the night so she told me to avoid the memory foam matresses and to go for the STL. I've been uncomfortably hot and it's been disturbing my sleep and have done some research and guess what? It has memory foam in it! We also have not found it any more comfortable than our 6 year old matress we just got rid of.

I personally want rid of it after two nights and think I may have a case awith Bensons re the memory foam point above.
  • A friend recommended buying a Sleep2live bed, so we bought one and I just wanted to let your readers here know that we are absolutely delighted with our bed. It is the most comfortable bed we have ever had. In fact in the first week that we had the bed we actually overslept twice !! There are a lot of negative comments on different review sites reagarding Sleep2live but I honestly think that disgruntled customers are far more likely to leave comments than people who are happy with their purchases. I just wanted to help even the balance. I have no connection with the company that makes these beds. We bought a 500 model,my side is tan (soft) and my husband's is green(medium).
My aches and pains that I used to wake up with are a thing of the past.
