There is no secret formula, as a rival would only have to buy one then take it apart. So the only people they are keeping secrets from is the public.
I can't understand why you are insisting on going for big well known brands?
Most of the big manufacturers have automated production, and many have cust quality to cut production costs (hence non turn mattresses). This is why you would get far better quality for less money by going for a smaller independent manufacturer, who still make them by hand.
Answer to your last paragraph - because I don't know of other brands, and I go for brands where someone has recommended one, or those I know and trust.
If someone told me there is a good bed made by "The Big Bed Company" for example, and only that salesman knew of it, then I would not buy it. Because all I would be able to go buy is the Salesman trying hard to sell me one.
I do not know of other manufacturers or stores as no one is going to, or able to reveal them on here. I'm not going to get into the saga of turn and non-turn again, as it gets us nowhere here.
My main factors in making such a valuable investment have been:- Comfort
- Support
- Value between stores for same products
- Store service and attitude
- Recommendations
- Knowing the brand.

They rang some people up for the details of the topping. That's all I know. Their attitude did put me off them anyway. The store, not just the bed.

In that case you may well get sucked into buying a low quality bed for a high price, as there are many beds made by big brands that are designed to be extremely comfortable when new, in order to attract customers in the show rooms. However due to many big manufacturers lowering quality to cut costs, the comfort sometimes doesn't last.
I have heard many people say that they their last mattress lasted 15 years, so it must be a good brand, and they would recommend them. But you try and find a mattress made by a big brand that is still made the way they used to make them 15 years ago. In fact there are a few big brands whos mattresses used to last 15 to 20 years, but these days you would be lucky if they lasted 2 years.
Knowing a brand means nothing at all. I could give you a list of companies who used to have a good reputation, but they quality has dropped over recent years.
I've asked you this before, but as someone who isn't an expert, how do you know if a mattress is giving you good support just by laying on it in a shop?
If you want recommendations, why have you only been on this thread? There are loads of mattress threads on MSE.
If I were you I would stay away from big brand names and big chain stores if you want good quality at a low price, and shop on line from a seller who gives a proper satisfaction guarantee that allows you to actually unpack and sleep on the mattress. This way it is in their interest to make sure that you make the right choice the first time.0 -

I don't feel the need to start again.
Without the knowledge of what we *should* apparently be buying (the actual brand name), then we go by our instinct, and feelings when we try a bed. It's a big investment. So we only buy if we are genuinely very happy with what we are about to buy, and those from whom we buy, armed with a bit of knowledge.
That is be BEST way to buy.
I would not buy from the SLT supplying store.
But after haggling TWICE with the store I am buying from, I am feeling 100% happy, supportive and comfortable.0 -
I need to replace king size mattress on a divan bed. Original mattress that came with bed is a King Koil Flexi Coil Spring System. Mattress is now 13 yrs old. My husband and myself both have back problems. Husband is 6'3" and about 16 stone. Im about 9 stone. Checked out Dreams today and am wary of the big stores after reading other reviews. Was tempted though by their Tempest Adjustable Kingsize for £999 although mattress seemed very poor quality. Want to be able to still use eletric blanket. Any good mattress recommendations welcome?0

Unfortunately, through my own problems here, I have discovered that this forum is not permitted to promote particular brands of any products on the market - even though a brand name is in this thread title.
So you will only find advice how how to find a good mattress, and the type of salesman that are generally good.
But not a brand or model.0 -

You would be right to stay away from big brands and big manufacturers.
If you want to use an electric blanket then you can't use memory foam. So if you want an adjustable bed then you would be better off with a pocket sprung only mattress. Most manufacturers of adjustable beds give an option of different types of mattress. So I'd shop around on line to get the best deal.0 -

If you want recommendations then read the other mattress threads as I have said before. You aren't going to get recommendations on a thread which is about a specific brand are you.0 -

However, I know from the rules I have been directed to, that no thread on MSE will recommend a brand anyway.
This thread, and others 'bed threads' on here about beds are about what to look out for. Not, what brand to buy and not to buy.0 -
I don't see why a thread about a particular brand should stop that, when the thread has gone that way.
However, I know from the rules I have been directed to, that no thread on MSE will recommend a brand anyway.

Read the rules again.
All I said was that I can't recommend anything, because I'm in the trade. Other people can make recommendations if they aren't in the trade, and many have done in other threads.
So rather than just arguing the toss on a thread that is about a specific brand, then read the other threads where there are various recommendations.0 -

But without the brands that someone is recommending, it is impossible to take it.
I could be a salesman in coffee, and then tell you that there are better coffee's than Nescafe. If a coffee fanatic asks me what it is, and I wouldn't tell them, they'd be furious.
So while I appreciate your possible "predicament", as someone trying to get advice, it's extremely frustrating to hear there is "better", without know WHAT is better.
I've said all this before though. So I am just wasting my breath I think.0
