  • Well I have to say that the fact that someone/anyone "owns" a freecycle site and can cream off the offers before they are put on the website has just put me off the whole thing.

I think I will now be unsubcribing icon9.gif

Edinburgh Lass - there is no obligation to give your item to a particular person just because they asked for it first. I know you shouldn't have to but you can insist that the availability of your item is circulated on the list proper so that all members see it, then you can choose who to give it to.

The moderator (owner) for the group I belong to (Dublin) came under a lot of personal attack a month or so ago for a few mistakes she made. In the ensuing arguments it became clear how much effort is involved in running a group, so personally I wouldn't be unhappy if she took first pick on some of my items. It's a balance though...some people put "wanted" emails out all the time but rarely offer anything -- then some people are the complete opposite and rarely ask for anything but make very kind and generous offers.

The aim of freecycle is to keep things out of landfill - if I keep this in mind as long as my stuff is kept in use then it's not of much importance who has it. What does annoy me is the thought that there are some people who take things in order to sell on and make money - that goes against the grain even if the items are kept out of landfill.

hey! that's a little unfair Edinburgh Lass.....taken totally the wrong way! I sent the e-mail out with the offer to all my group and asked if I could have it. I was selected , that was the choice of the giver. Yes, all 'owners/moderators of Freecycle by nature are going to see the offers prior to them being listed. We have to moderate e-mails, so you cannot avoid that. I can't speak for anyone else (though I assume we are all the same) but I would never abuse that facility. I have given lot's of things to the people of my group and just because I was selected to get one particular item does not mean sinister goings on are occuring!

I've joined my local freecycle and found that for every item offered there are 10 wanted ads :(

I think I see the Freecycle in a different way to some because I joined yesterday and there are a lot of wanted posts. I joined to have the opportunity to get rid of some crap that is cluttering up our house. It's good stuff, but is taking up space.
FWIW anyone who is a mod/owner of a site obviously cares enough about recycling to devote their time to a site. Who cares if they get first dabs at things?

i agree its all free so it does not matter who gets it as long as its going to a good home and will be used instead of being chucked away so i say keep up the good work because if there wasnt sites like this then people would just dump it and its a waste if others could make use of it
