    Why Eclipse Broadband:

    Hi Everyone!

there are cheaper broadband out there HOWEVER i have been very impressed with Eclipse for the following reasons:

I must stress I am talking about Eclipse's Evolution Broadband Packages

    1. £14.99 gives me 8mb Unlimited (6mb actual due to my line and unlimited out of peak hours, with a 20gb limit in peak hours 6pm-midnight, but i personally can not download 20gb of stuff in 6 hours lol)

    2. Very very impressive customer services, my account was set up within 5 working days and when you call them the wait is never more that 5 mins

    3. Amazing online control centre, tells you all about the status of the ISP, your account details, any open issues, issues that have been solved. An example is as follows:

    4. They are giving away free wireless router at the moment!

    Negatives:

*I have found the network to go slower at the peak time 6pm-midnight however we are still talking well above 1mb so for normal browsing not an issue.

    Highly Recommended! :)

They seem to be a good ISP if you look at them on ADSLguide.

One thing to be aware of though. The wireless router is not free if you are simply signing up to broadband for the first time. It is only free if you are transferring your broadband from an existing ISP to Eclipse.

You can stay with your existing ISP on dial-up until your new ISP has your broadband activated.

Many broadband deals also include access to dial-up in case the broadband goes down. Not all offer this so you would have to check with the ISP you are going to use.

Eclipse used to be good but since they got taken over by Kingston their service has gone downhill severely. We have it installed at our workplace and the email server is constantly down. It is just so frustrating. Definitely would not recommend this bunch.
  • Given my experience this week with TT, I would also say avoid them at all cost now. After having a relatively trouble free 4 months with them, I've had enough this week.

This morning I've asked for a second line to be reconnected in the house so that I can get a second broadband line as a back up. As I'm on dial up currently it's taking me forever to research ISPs.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a reliable and reasonable ISP please? I don't need huge amounts of bandwidth as it'll be my backup service.

I was with pipex for 3 years and had no problems with them (until the end!) but ideally looking for something a bit cheaper for this second line.

    Thanks if you can help

Our computer club has decided to go with freedom2surf. Their package is £14.99. They are owned by Pipex. Another one I've mentioned a few times is Plusnet. I know we will get the usual people telling you bad things about them but compare them on ADSL Guide and make your own mind up. Depending how much bandwidth you want they have a starting price of £9.99 a month. They are now owned by BT.

Initially have a look at what is said about the ISPs on:

    http://www.adslguide.org.uk

You can compare all the ISPs on service, speed and price.

  • Thanks Art, I'm working my way through the adslguide forums but it's so slow on this connection. Thanks for the tips though.

If you click on 'compare' on the left in the ADSL guide you can select up to 6 ISPs and see how they rate against each other in a graphical form.

Tracey, Why on earth are you going to the expense of a second line to your house. I got rid of my 2nd 6 months ago when I moved from dial-up to Primus Broadband (see thread) and have not had any problems since. But if you are prepared to shell out an extra £11 per month for line rental, why not go to one of theTOP ISPs such as Zen Internet or Nildram. Also check out: http://www.ispreview.co.uk/ You can go wireless and network other PCs if you have more than one user.

I would also recommend just one decent ISP rather than getting two different ones. The service from Zen is excellent. No dropped speeds. No dropped connection. No problems. I've been with them for about two years, and this has been my experience of them (not even one two minute problem with the connection in the whole of that time). Zen have won awards for the quality of their service for many years now.
