  • Think I'll wait for HSBC to do their "monthly sweep" (as mentioned by others on various threads) before I phone them - made sure the balance on account is v good by making transfer from Nat West account!
I just wonder why man on phone said no to me about new visa considering they no longer issue Solo debit cards!!!
  • Hey all,

Just to let you I am over the moon. Having been a slave to the Solo card from HSBC for the last 2 years, things are finally looking up. I read this forum last night and decided see what HSBC would do. Baring in mind that only last month they declined me for a maestro i sent a message on HSBC online banking saying my card was playing up and could they order me a new one. I got this wonderful reply this morning:

    Dear Mr ******

    Debit Card - 4***** ********

Thank you for your e-message received 23February 2009.

Please be advised that VISA cards will be issued to our entire debit card portfolio for Personal (including Private Bank and Offshore), Commercial and first direct current account customers.

Please note that HSBC chose VISA to enable our customers to use their debit cards more widely around the world. Customers will be able to use their VISA debit card at over 26 million retail outlets and more than a million cash machines in 160 countries around the world.

As such, I have ordered you a new Visa Debit card on 24 February 2009 which you should receive at your home address within 4-6 working days.

Please destroy your old Solo card upon receiving you new card. You can continue to use your old Solo card PIN for your new Visa Debit card. Your current card will be valid for 30 days.

Please note, on receipt of Visa Debit cards, customers must now 'activate' them. This has been added for security purposes and will allow card delivery methods to be relaxed. You can activate your new VISA Debit card via the methods below.

    1. Using Personal Internet Banking.
    2. Using an ATM. The card will be active upon completion of one of the following successful transactions (a message will not be displayed)

    - Balance enquiry.
    - Cash withdrawal.
    - Transfer between accounts.
    - Mobile top-up.
    - Charity donation.
    3. By calling 0800 783 5263 (International +44 1226 261010)(you do not have to be registered for telephone banking to activate this way and will require your 16 digit Visa Debit card number and your date of birth.)

Should you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us.

    Kind regards
    Hassanin Ahmed

I am so happy. So anyone out there who has a Solo, get yourself on the phone or online banking and get it swapped out. All i have to do is now wait...!

    Cork.
  • I know how you feel

I've had a bank account with Midland/HSBC since I was 11 (I'm 23 now) and I've always been given a solo card. I can understand giving them to kids but not working adults.

I've always been happy with HSBC but it got to the point where I was going to switch banks that give you a VISA debit card. I shop online all the time and wanting to buy something from a site that doesn't accept solo/maestro is a pain.

I was happy to learn they were going to replace solo/maestro with VISA, but I had to wait til my current card expired (expires in 2011)

I wasn't going to wait that long so I phoned HSBC and I told them I lost my card.

They told me they are sending me a brand new VISA debit card.

A few days later I recieved my shiny new silver VISA and I've never been happier.

If you phoned HSBC and they told you that you had to wait til you card expired or don't qualify etc tell them you lost it and they will replace it with a VISA :D
  • the new visa debit card has a £300 daily limit on cash withdrawals as apposed to £200 i had on my solo and maestro cards.
mind u i wish i had £300 to draw out :rotfl:
  • Yup, got my card yesterday, fantastic! ANd as bored said, £300 limit not £200 which is great for me as i always had to take my rent out over two days but now i dont have to! Superb.
  • Yes, yes, yes, YES!!!! It came this morning! Lovely! Made my weekend! Sad yes!!!

yea but anyone can ring HSBC and change the daily withdrawal limit can't they? My HSBC Plus only let me do 300 and I needed 500 so asked at branch and they said sure, but reminded me that it was my responsibility etc and if my card got nicked with the PIN that i'd lose a lot, quicker (no shiit sherlock!)

Remember though, these cards are 'all auth' (as detailed on your PIN advice) which means that you cannot use them on planes, trains and petrol pay at pumps etc.

They have to be online to make authorisations. Basically a glorified electron card

Next time I get on the train at my local unstaffed station, I'll see if the card works on-board. I really can't see HSBC issuing cards that require authorisation for every transaction - why are the numbers embossed on the card if it can't be used offline?
