My current HSBC Maestro debit card expires next month. Will HSBC automatically send me a new Visa debit card or will I have to specifically ask HSBC that I want a Visa debit card?

I got a letter about this today,
My current solo expires next month and was going to get a maestro, but now it says i'm getting a visa, does this mean i'll be getting a full visa, or an electron?

How do you know you would get a maestro, did they tell you they'd give you one? If not then you'll get a full auth visa debit (glorified electron) but if they had already confirmed that one would be issued then you should get full visa debit card.

Way to test it is at Tesco pump - full auth cards will not work here, if its a full visa debit card then it will go through and debit £1 from your account until the balance is due.

I got a letter a couple of months ago which said when I was 17 I would receive a Maestro card, and the letter states that the card is changing from maestro to visa, otherwise, I would have thought it would have said solo to visa.

I've used my HSBC VISA Debit in many Pay@Pump petrol stations, never-in-doubt is simply wrong.

Totally agree with the above, Fact......... the hsbc/first direct card is a visa debit card it works with a pin like normal cards anywhere, the reason they put debit on the card is that its not a visa credit card. May be somebody is getting mixed up with an electron card  Mine you is it a cheque card as well as cheques are going out of fashion?

Totally disagree with you - fact (cos you're way off the mark - you been smoking?) lol

Try reading again! I never mentioned that it wasn't!! Although you're wrong - HSBC All Auth cards do not work everywhere - fact!

I am saying they are different kinds of cards! First Direct are different, you either qualify for an account or you do not. They do not issue solo/electron so forget them.

HSBC use open cards (i.e. you can use it even if the terminal is offline or for example on a plane or tesco pumps) or they use full authorisation cards which are the old Solo cards - they need authorising at each point of sale. An offline terminal will decline the transaction as they are programmed to request authorisation at each POS.

I know the difference between visa cr & visa db thanks - LOL. I think you need to check back the last few posts.....

Here is my proof, exactly what i've been saying all along! Differences are clear to see!

If you got Maestro before, you will get a full (non All-Auth) Visa Debit. The all-auth cards replace Solo.

Ooops, just noticed this - thanks. Maybe a good idea to tell last poster that you do work for HSBC LOL.

Ahh they were stock letters, however Solo is a division of Maestro so in effect it is one and the same in reference to that!

But as you're 17 you may qualify, but don't think you'll get an open card as credit can only be given to over 18's (someone will clarify) so i'd have thought you'd get the full authorisation version, i.e. it checks before allowing each purchase and you can't use it at tesco pumps, on a plane and places that are 'offline' as such. It would simply decline as it must get authorised before it will let you spend.
