    Hi
I have a student account with HSBC and have got a visa debit card. There is no cheque guarantee on the back. Does this mean I have a full authorisation card as in the equivalent of the old solo?

I did what never-in-doubt suggested and ordered a PIN advice but it doesnt mention anything on there about what sort of card it is.

    Thanks.

Yes. I have a student account but I have cheque guarantee on my visa debit card because I previously had it on my mastero card.My card is not full authorisation.

    Hopes this helps

    Hi

Your best to ring and ask - at the top of the PIN advice it should say HSBC Debit Card or something - in black bold font.... if not, maybe they changed them but both mine have it...... hmmmm, if you open the actual PIN advice letter and see, it would be folded twice, look by the top crease and across there mine says Full Auth Visa Debit Card - my new one that isn't full auth says HSBC Visa Debit Card.

If yours says HSBC Visa Debit Card then maybe it's a full card..... did you used to have a solo before or a maestro card? If maestro, was it cgc or not?

Best ring HSBC for definite answer though...

They could well be issuing cards for off-line use that are not cheque cards as the scheme is being phased out.

I actually have a joint account with them too which is a maestro and CGC as well and opened a student account with them. I have emailed them through internet banking and apparently it is a solo equivalent Visa Debit so thats cleared that up.
    Thanks for your help.

I recently lost my First Direct Maestro card and it's been replaced with a Visa Debit.

Are there any things to watch out for with this card?

I have read somewhere that Visa debit cards can charge EXTRA on top when you purchase currency at a foreign exchange place. Is there any truth to this - I certainly hope this is not the case!

Yes its true - some stores do not differentiate between Visa debit and Visa credit and so charge an extra % as they see fit. I had this with a holiday I paid for using Visa Debit - they wanted to add an extra 2.25% until I started arguing that they were simply wrong. In the end I told them if you're charging me then sod you, i'll pay with Visa CC and so I did!

Thanks for that. I am slowly beginning to regret losing my Maestro with talk of all these charges. Will purchases abroad still charged at the normal 2.75% rate with no additional fee on top?

    Which places are these?

    Hiya

I miss Maestro but hey, I also miss switch and tbh pointless whining cos I know eventually Maestro will be a thing of the past - Mastercard Debit will be the new Maestro.....

You'll get charged whatever the arrangement is - i've heard as a Plus customer its cheaper to take cash out abroad but will check before I go.... so that would be bank/account specific.

The places, well take Thomson or Thomas Cook for instance. Both classed my Visa Debit as a Credit card and as such I just bought on my CC and then BT'd to my airmiles card which is 0% and have the funds in my bank. When the 0% runs out i'll pay the balance off and in the process earned two lots of miles for the same £4k spend so got 8000 miles out of it! If i'd used debit card i'd have got 0 miles so it kinda worked for me, weirdly enough....

Best advice, don't use HSBC Cards abroad, get a Nationwide Flexaccount, no charges for ATM withdrawals anywhere in Europe and a great exchange rate even tho' they use Visa Cards.
