If you got Maestro before, you will get a full (non All-Auth) Visa Debit. The all-auth cards replace Solo.

    Shelfstacker,

How would you differentiate a full and all-auth visa debit from HSBC? It's still a 4659 BIN and 4659 44 INN

Savagej mentioned "The authorisation request comes in the form of a 3 digit code that is encoded in to the chip and magstripe, one of those 3 digits dictates if authorisation is necessary same with electron."

That's no easy way to see the encoded 3 digit code, is there?

    Thanks

I've used my HSBC VISA Debit in many Pay@Pump petrol stations, never-in-doubt is simply wrong.

The all auth ones will not work. I have one so I do know! I have to use my Maestro at tesco pumps. I never suggested for one moment that all visa debits wouldn't work - I specifically meant that all auth ones will not work.

When you get your PIN advice it says at the top what card you have and trust me, if says all auth visa debit card then you cannot use it at tesco pumps or an a terminal that is offline - it simply cannot be done.

The name of the card speaks for itself! All Authorisation

However, i'd assume that you have a full card, like the Maestro. The equivalent in that instance (all auth Maestro) would have been a Solo. That too, is a fact.

I'm sure SS / Rose and others will confirm this.

    HSBC Cards:

    Solo - All Auth card
Maestro - Glorified Solo but considered to be for a full account (2 in 1)
    Maestro + Cheque Guarantee (3 in 1)
Visa Debit - All Authorisation - basically an electron card
Visa Debit - Full Card - like a Maestro card considered to be a full account (2 in 1)
Visa Debit + Cheque Guarantee (3 in 1)

These are the varying cards available (old and current) with HSBC.

not all do, you have to request it. If you have a cg now, your replacement will have it. If you try and open a new account it will be defaulted to be a 2 in 1 card unless you request a cg and your behaviour/credit score allows it in which case you can have it.

new customer/account or existing? Maybe your behaviour score allowed it or you had one on your old Maestro - I do not know but I do know (from my branch and other users on here) that they do not come as standard unless you ask/prequalify/already have

New customer = your score allowed it
Existing = you already had it on last card or you qualified for it

    That would be why!

the CG VISA do have the hologram but i havnt seen one as all the cards that come to the branch dont have it as we are not issuing those cards unless requested and no one has requested one from our branch!

Which I what I said before but I got the hologram fact incorrect which I apologise for!

Just get a PS/2 mag stripe reader off Ebay. They aren't expensive.
