HSBC Visa Debit Card

Options
Hi
I've heard HSBC are going to issue visa debit cards instead of their old Maetro. Has anyone received visa debit card from them? Do you have any ideas when they're going to give them out?
Cheers

As far as I know the roll-out starts mid-Jan but I am sure other forum members will know for sure!
  • Starts in February, Plus and Premier customers first.
  • Search for Shelfstackers posts on the subject.

    Edit: Too late!
Trying to only spend money when I absolutely have to.
Barclaycard: £4559-1500 = £3059 (Will have £900 to add to that end of September)
    Loan from Friend = £2000

Is there any benefit to the cards being Visa instead of Maestro just out of interest?
  • Makes purchasing from overseas stores online a little easier, as more of them accept Maestro Visa. If you do most of your buying in the UK however it'll make little difference.

The big/only real difference for most people will be that even though debit cards are not covered by the Consumer Credit Act - so you won't get your money back if the retailer goes broke - you do get better protection with Visa Debit cards.

This is because Visa have something called 'Visa Debit Chargeback' and any bank that issues a Visa debit card has to comply with the scheme. This means you can claim money back if the goods you buy are damaged, or the product or services are not delivered. There is also no limit on what you can claim. But you have to claim within 120 days of the date you expected the goods to be delivered or the firm going bust.

Maestro only offer a refund if you are a UK cardholder who ordered goods online from an overseas website and they don't arrive.

    Regards

I thought that more accepted Visa, I could be wrong of course.;)

I have never had a problem using Visa or Maestro anywhere.

Slip of the tongue. ;) And no, never had any problems with acceptance myself, either.

Going to sound really dumb here, but for current customers Plus and Premier's new cards are sent out first, correct?

But what about new customers, for example the student current account or basic current account. Will they get maestro cards only for them to have to change them again at a later date this year or next year?

I'm not entirely sure, to be honest. I'm GUESSING new customers would get Visa sent out. But don't quote me on that.
