Would make the most sense to send out a visa card to a new customer rather than the old maestro card. Then again, I've never understood why some have a grudge against maestro.

I thought that more accepted Visa, I could be wrong of course.;)

From memory - as its a few years now since I had to look into it - VISA is slightly more popular in North America and Mastercard is more accepted in Europe.

Would appear that HSBC are too:
Pay for goods and services in shops, restaurants, etc, wherever you see the corresponding logo shown on your card. For example,Visa cards can be used wherever the Visa logo is displayed.

Not everywhere will accept Maestro at POS - some countries just don't, and there's even a few banks that don't support them at ATMs.

Visa, however, has a pretty staunch "Accept All Cards Policy," so local variations of cards should be accepted everywhere (i.e. Visa Electron should be accepted by all merchants, regardless of whether Visa Electron is even issued in their country).

My daughter is 20 and has HSBC Current Account.
When she opened it last year she was given a Solo debit card. She has a part time job, deposits £400-£500 per month and her account is always in good order.
There have been several occasions over the past year when she has not been able to make a purchase using the Solo card, online, purchasing rail tickets, registering her card with ebay to name a few.
We've looked on the HSBC website, but can't see any specific criteria mentioned for giving a Solo card instead of a Maestro or Visa.
Does anyone know anything about this before we approach HSBC?
    Thanks!

She was issued with a SOLO probably because of the results of the credit scoring.. To be fair though, its not always a bad thing.. The difference between a solo and the maestro is that solo is always authorised which means if the funds are not available, the card should decline.

When the changeover of cards begin next month, she will receive a visa though again this will be all authorising.

If your daughters situation has now changed since she opened the account, ask her to pop in to her branch ( or via telephone banking) and see if she can upgrade her card..

    Hope this helps

Many thanks for your response. May I ask how you know this? I can't find any explanation of this on HSBC website. My daughter has always managed her accounts responsibly, will it be the case that after 12 months she has 'proved' herself and they will issue a Visa debit? She would like this simply because it is more versatile.

They did that to me I have my account with Lloyds and I have a platinum card and allsorts with them. Then me and my boyfriend opened a joint account with HSBC and they would only give us Solo Cards there was about £2k going in monthly - they wouldn't give us an overdraft either. We had to wait until we had been with them a couple of years then they changed us to Maestro.

I dislike HSBC they nearly made us lose our first house too - everytime we went in they kept banging on about their mortgages to us so we thought ok we will talk to you they agreed to lend us what we needed so we found a house made an offer etc.. Told HSBC and they changed their minds (said we hadn't had an account with them long enough??) Had to quickly see the estate agents mortgage advisor to get us a mortgage with someone else. Sooo stressful. That was 5 years ago.
