  • Just a headsup: rollout starts 10th January. All new applicants after that date will get Visa Debit cards.

Can shelfstacker advise if there will be a charge at bureaux de change for using hsbc visa? I asked HSBC this via secure message and they said no, but I'm not convinced. Several times my OH has tried to use her visa debit (lloyds) to buy currency and they always tell her to pay in cash, otherwise there'll be a fee to pay.
  • Does anybody know if the likes of Aldi & Lidl will accept the Visa Debit card? One of the main reasons I've kept my HSBC account is because it's the only one hubby and I have between us which has a Maestro card, which we can use to pay for our shopping in Aldi/Lidl. If that's going to be phased out, we're going to have to start being more organised, and remember to go to the cashpoint before we go shopping!
Also, my HSBC card currently has an expiry date of 2010 on, will HSBC force the changeover before it expires, or have we got another 18 months or so till it runs out on its own?

Yes, Aldi and Lidl do accept the Visa Debit card. They don't accept credit cards (Visa (Credit), Mastercard, AmEx etc) though.

That used to be the case - both now accept Credit Cards as well as Debit Cards.

Visa CREDIT, yes, probably be a charge. Visa DEBIT (as HSBC debit cards are switching to), no.

If you are with first direct I would of thought so. I dont know if HSBC are going to do Electron as well as Visa debit.

Not "Electron" as such, but there will be a card which will be "All Authorised", as in all transactions must be authorised online. This is similar to the one on Lloyds' Basic Bank Accounts, and is what will be replacing Solo.
