I'd bank on you not having an MPEG-2 Decoder on the computer in question, therefore it was unable to playback DVDs..

    agreed.

Just more proof of why i bought a mac, only wish he did the same

    Vista basic maybe ???

Possibly. Vista Basic and Vista Business don't have in-built Mpeg-2 decoders, which I suspect was causing the problem. VLC Media Player is as good a solution as any.

I did like having access to a Unix command line prompt on the Mac.. but really, i don't see the great need. I personally hated the messy UI - I've got a screen, so fill it; i don't want lots of windows floating around.

I'm not sure what you mean by the "messy UI"; Apple are widely regarded as having some of the best human interface designers in the business.

I always know when a Windows user has been using my Mac, as they stretch out all the windows to fill the screen. They must know of some websites that are 1,440 pixels wide.
There's also considerably more free software for Windows, due to the larger market base.

What can you do for free on Windows that you can't do on a Mac?
Apple stuff is well made. But, with electrical equipment that is out of date within 2-3 years, how well made to you need to make things? My old plastic cased Dell laptop took a hell of a beating but kept on functioning for 2 years before work upgraded it for me.

But that's the point; Macs aren't out of date in 2 or 3 years. I know someone who has a G3 iMac that's about 8 years old now, and it still runs just fine. My sister bought a Toshiba laptop the year before Vista came out, and it won't run it.

I don't mind paying a little more for a machine if it means I don't have to replace it every 2 years. Meanwhile my sister now wants a Mac.
Apple have cornered the market for people with more money and prepared to pay for something different and stand out. I see my PC as a functional tool and don't need it made out of a solid piece of aluminum and oozing style.

It's funny; I see my computer as a functional item, and that's why I have a Mac.

By the way Marty, yes I think Apple should release cheaper products, they would improve their market share dramatically.

Apple have been dramatically increasing their market share over the past few years anyway. They don't appear to have any interest in producing shoddier products in an attempt to corner the market.
  • Another thing you have to consider is the after-sales support.

I believe you will find that Apple is rated number one or there about.

If you live near or are able to get to an Apple store then you 'should' get top notch support from the Genius Bar

I've had my 'Powerbook' for three to four years now and it is as good now as it was then. The only upgrade i've done is to added extra RAM and moved from Panther to Tiger (they name their operating system after big cats, the latest being Leopard, beats the names given by Microsoft for their OS :p )

'Touch wood', I've never needed to use the Genius Bar or any other support as I am fairly computer literate and am able to answer all my queries via google.

For people who are not as computer literate or just want their 'hand held' then this service is well worth the supposely 'extra' cost that their products go for.

My next computer is going to be a laptop with windows installed. It will cost under £400. Can I buy a Mac laptop at that price?

    Of course not.

But you can't buy a PC that's as well made as a Mac for that price.

So it's apples and oranges really (no pun intended!).

Windows - the hardware is cheaper, the software more familiar

don't you just love these debates,
can we do it again next month

We mac users don't really need to blow the Apple Trumpet, We have them,

The more explicit the are the better they stay.

let these windoze users believe they have all they need, and i'll keep using my machine for years to come

Unfortunately I was busy. I agree entirely that he has done an excellent job in turning Apple around. From what I can remember they stood a real risk of going under until they got him back in. However on a personal level I still think he's an annoying, smug !!!!!!. Perhaps if I met him I'd change my opinion but I can only go on what I've seen in the media.

By the way Marty, yes I think Apple should release cheaper products, they would improve their market share dramatically.

As it happens, Steve Jobs was quite busy on his own behalf, too. Started a little company called Pixar that made a few films before he eventually sold it to Disney. But I'm sure you were engaged in something much more lucrative. :D

But, to address your other point: Steve Jobs has often explained that Apple is not interested in market share; it's interested in making money.

It's precisely because Steve Jobs took one of those views that you so fervently disagree with and decided to leave the low-margin, low-profit section of the market to others to scrabble over and go bust that Apple has been so phenomenally successful.

Use Windows for home, work and play. No point (for me) in using anything else.

Personally, I prefer to play with things a lot curvier, animated, appreciative and prettier than a computer.

But then, I'm like that. Don't mind me; if you are happier to play with a plastic box running Windows, may you enjoy it.

    To each, his own. :)

Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:

As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

Since this is a discussion on computers, I didn't feel it appropriate to bring my other half into this, but I guess some people will be compelled to try and fornicate with their computers..

Im sure the people who work at the Genius Bar are great at what they do but who on earth came up with that name? Somehow it just re-inforces all of the negative stereotypes about Apple and Apple users. The words smug and arrogant just leap to mind.
It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die
