^ and that's with the rampant piracy of microsoft software, if every copy of office or windows was legally bought, then I'm sure microsoft could buy the world (maybe not literally)

If everyone who used Microsoft's software illegally had to pay for it, there would be a lot more people using Linux and Open Office.
  • hi guys

I bought a MacBook about two months ago and will never, never, ever use a pc again. I absolutely love my mac, it's cool, works like a dream and NO BUGS!

Can't ever go back again, and it's so easy to use and I took to it really fast, and if you don't APPLE will even give you a year's worth of lessons at the genius bar for £ 76.00 and you can have a lesson a week for a year.

    Cheers

it has been ages since the age old mac vs pc vs linux debate, and one thing i love is how mac users explain things as to why they like their macs, whereas windows users say, it does what i want and i'm not changing...

    weird that huh?

Ok. Thanks all for the answers, but I don't want to see any arguments!! Next question, if I did a document in office, can that be worked on with a mac? and if I created a document in a mac, can I edit it in office? I don't know a lot about macs etc, hence relying on advice here. Also, why do macs get less viruses etc?

    Thanks
My suggestion and/or advice is my own and it is up to you if you follow it, please check the advice given before acting on it.

    Word processing: Yes and yes.

As far as viruses, its a combination of the mac OS being better at preventing "bad stuff"(tm) from happening and the fact that there are far more windows boxes about so if you are writing viruses (virii?) you go for the larger target.

Macs cost more than some PCs, and less than others. They are well built, exceptionally beautifully designed machines which generally last a lot longer than PCs at the same price point.
I agree with you that they are very nice to look at, but i disagree that they last longer than a PC. If you look after any device it can last years. My PC is running in as-new condition becaus ei re-format reguarly.

With a Mac you can run OS X, and also Windows and Linux if you really want to. Macs come with the iLife suite of applications, which has no equivalent on Windows. Many tasks are much simpler on a Mac; to install software, you generally just drag it to your applications folder. To uninstall it, just delete it. No buggy and slow add/remove program lists.

    iMovie = Windows movie maker
Garageband = Fruity loops / Sound forge
    iDVD = Nero / imgburn
iPhoto = Windows picture viewer / Photoshop
And the tens of thousands of freeware applications for PC.

Takes me 3 clicks to get to my 'Add/Remove programs' list. Then about 10 seconds to populate. Then a further 2/3 clicks to uninstall something.

While any computer can get a virus, the threat level when using a Mac is vastly lower than using Windows. The same goes for trojans, malware, spyware, etc.
Because Macs are less-common tbh. People would rather make a virus to affect more people, so they make them for PC. I haven't had one virus or tojan in the 10 months or so since i built my PC.

It just makes sense to me to buy a computer which is designed by the company who designed the OS I'll be using on it.
Macs are using PC hardware. Practically nothing of a Mac is designed by Apple. CPU = Intel core 2 duo 45nm (similar to that is in my PC, released over a year ago) GPU = Nvidia 8800 GS (again, PC hardware)

And the price. £1,359.00 for a 24inch iMac. In which you get generic off the shelf PC componants.
    In comparison to my PC:

    My PC | 24" iMac

    £700 | £1,359.00
    3ghz cpu | 3ghz cpu
    2gb 1066mhz ram | 2gb 800mhz ram
    500gb hdd | 500gb hdd
    8800GT GPU | 8800GS GPU

And to make it fair i'll add a 24" monitor to the price of my system:
    My PC | iMac
    £900 | £1,359
Thats allot of penny sweets i could buy with £460. And remmeber, my setup is a gaming rig built for gaming performance. I'd like to see an iMac keep up with the modern PC gaming scene. (not to mention good games rarely come out on mac).

And no, i'm not against Apple. I love my iPod, and it works great with my Windows PC.

I use both; I do a podcast and I use the Windows PC's and Skype to record it and Garageband on the Mac to compile it.
Each platform has it's plusses and minuses!
My view is that if you're happy with the platform you are using, then fine - no need to slag off someone who is happier using a different platform - they have their reasons for doing what they do so let them be! I went through all this before, in the good old days of ZX Spectrum vs C64, then Atari ST vs Amiga.
The only thing that winds me up slightly is all this "I'm a PC" rubbish - a Mac is a PC too, as is my ZX 81, my ZX Spectrum, my Apple //e and my Atari ST; PC is short for Personal Computer and all the aforementioned devices are computers and are personal. (oh, and before anyone say anything, I know Apple started this off and they should have known better... :) )

I agree. The whole "i'm a mac, i'm a pc" is a bit darn stupid now.

So you don't think it reasonable to think that a £900 Sony VAIO will last longer than a £200 PC from Tescos?

Ignoring the fact that some of your comparisons are a little off (Windows Movie Maker is a joke compared to iMovie), Sound Forge, Fruity Loops, Nero and Photoshop come free with PCs do they?

When you record something with Sound Forge, does it automatically appear in Windows Movie Maker to use in your films? When you have a photo in Windows Picture Viewer, does it appear in Nero so you can add it to a slideshow?
Takes me 3 clicks to get to my 'Add/Remove programs' list. Then about 10 seconds to populate. Then a further 2/3 clicks to uninstall something.
Definitely sounds more inconvenient to me.
Because Macs are less-common tbh. People would rather make a virus to affect more people, so they make them for PC.
That's certainly part of the reason, but it's not the whole story.

Apple design all Macs. Who do you think chooses what harware goes into them?

I suppose Dell don't make Dells?

Is your system an all-in-one design?

iMacs aren't made from totally generic off the shelf components.
And to make it fair i'll add a 24" monitor to the price of my system:

Yes, you could buy the software that didn't come on your PC which enables it to do what a Mac can out of the box.
And remmeber, my setup is a gaming rig built for gaming performance. I'd like to see an iMac keep up with the modern PC gaming scene. (not to mention good games rarely come out on mac).
Well if you want a computer to play Windows games on, buying a Mac is a bit of a silly idea in the first place.
  • Because there's all those great Mac games...
