As well as the poll, I'd like to know why people use what they do. Or maybe just listing the advantages and disadvantages of both please. I'm about to get a laptop and some other family members are as well and I'm wondering what to get.
Thanks

Hi Airwolf
I'm interested in this topic as I'm looking to buy a new desktop but am not sure if I should get a Windows or a Mac. I fancy a Mac mini just for a change, but I'll check this post for other responses while I make up my mind.

Like fermi I can't vote. I use 3 different Linux variants on 5 PCs.
Two of them can dual-boot into Windows, but I use Virtualbox now if I want to run something that's Win-only.0 -
I was a staunch Windows supporter until Vista. Never liked the look of it so when my laptop died I bought a MacBook. Love it and will never go back0

Macs cost a lot more than Windows PCs, and are slightly nicer.
Check that the applications you want are available on the Mac and factor that into the cost (ie. if you have M$ Office on Windows on your outgoing machine already then you don't need to buy it again, whereas with going to mac you would).
I recently went through the exercise and ended up with a Dell; the three deciding factors were: (a) the price, (b) the screen resolution, and (c) the fact that I already have the Windows apps.0 -
mac's do cost more than windows Pc's, but 90% of the time they are better designed, more sturdy, and they actually last longer.
Even now when the specs are nearly identical, mac's tend to last longer, as the software is designed for the hardware. It isn't uncommon for people to be using a mac laptop, when it is over 5 years old..
also, the cost myth isn't that strong nowadays... take a look at this comparison..
MacBook 13" screen
2.4ghz core 2 duo
2gb ram
250gb hard drive
dvd re writer
wifi / bluetooth
£1125
Macbook 13" Screen
2.0ghz core 2 duo
2gb ram
160gb hard drive
dvd re writer
wifi / bluetooth
£929
Sony
2.26ghz core 2 duo
4gb ram
320gb hdd
dvd re writer
wireless
£978
when you compare like for like (screen size, weight etc) the mac's come in reasonably competitive. and they ain't made of plastic that break easily... man, i've dropped my macbookpro so many times, and it still works, it is unbeleiveable..

Macs cost more than some PCs, and less than others. They are well built, exceptionally beautifully designed machines which generally last a lot longer than PCs at the same price point.
With a Mac you can run OS X, and also Windows and Linux if you really want to. Macs come with the iLife suite of applications, which has no equivalent on Windows. Many tasks are much simpler on a Mac; to install software, you generally just drag it to your applications folder. To uninstall it, just delete it. No buggy and slow add/remove program lists.
While any computer can get a virus, the threat level when using a Mac is vastly lower than using Windows. The same goes for trojans, malware, spyware, etc.
It just makes sense to me to buy a computer which is designed by the company who designed the OS I'll be using on it.0 -
Windows. The latest round of Macs are plagued with overheating issues. The quality of Mac OS X is going down the pan and Steve Jobs makes sure you pay through the nose for hardware and that he controls what you can and cannot add.Conor
