Bit like the manufacturing industry I used to be in. (before it went). Paid until five, so at ten to five it was accepted that that was the time to put your coat on, ready to stand by the door. At five you could be running across the car park, then be in your car leaving at about 2 seconds past.
This wasn't my feeling, when the buzzer went at five, that's when you stopped working as far as I was concerned.
It was a good way for management to organise the redundacies though.
And in response to Freddie Snowbits, we had heard of unions, it was just that we wanted to work, so why is it the managers problem if he gets rid of you? And to djb125, if you keep closing, you won't be doing a job like yours, because I'll certainly phone head office, and go somewhere else to buy if the shop is shut early.
Customers may be a nuisance, but that's what comes of trying to sell people things.
What Freddie Snowbits is making a point about is the lack of give and take of some companies.
I've unfortunately worked for a company that if say it was bad weather and most of the staff commuted long distances, they would tell you to take it from your holiday if you were more than an hour late. (There is not a lot you can do if signals are frozen.)
There as another company I have worked for sent me home when the weather was bad.
Now if you were an employee and asked to work a bit extra which employer would you be inclined to be flexible working extra for?
I should add this summed up the general attitude of the managers towards the staff.I'm not cynical I'm realistic

We are talking about a poxy job paying minimum wage. It is hardly a career.

I understand your point but if someone wants to work late to finish a particular job then surely that's down to the individual. I worked for a record company where times were very flexible but people often worked late through choice.0

It may be poxy and minimum wage, but it pays the bills. Please excuse me for having no career and choosing to work somewhere that suits my individual needs. You obviously have a wonderful career earning lots of cash and can afford to make pointless statements like that.
On a seperate point... I don't see the harm in staying behind for 10 mins (because to be honest, that's all it takes) to take the tills off and do whatever else needs doing. If everyone stayed behind to help it would get done a lot quicker. Yes, it's annoying when customers come in just before you close, but a simple "we are closing soon" doesn't hurt. Yes, it's annoying that you have to do a little bit of unpaid work, but think of all the times during the day that you are getting paid to work, but are doing something else eg. making a brew or popping out for a fag etc. (Not saying EVERYONE does that) It all adds up.0 -
i can see both sides, i worked in retail for nearly 7 years and the number of times i left 20+ minutes late because people didnt understand the concept of 'the store is closing' despite people walking accross the (very large) store to tell them never ceased to amaze me.
we were apparently paid for it but our wage slips were monthly, our contracts vague and higher rate overtime mysteriously never got paid properly (and human resources were crap), i voted with my feet and earn more than my supervisors do by quite a decent bit lolthings arent the way they were before, you wouldnt even recognise me anymore- not that you knew me back thenMercilessKiller wrote: »BH is my best mate too, its ok

There you go then.
It is because of people like you that companies get away with treating it's staff like dirt.
If you ALL got together and told them to shove it then I am sure they would find a way to pay you for the 1 1/2 hours free labour each week.
Let me quickly work it out.
Over a year at 1 1/2 hours a week on minimum wage = £437 a year.
So basically you are given them a months pay. (if my maths are correct).
Now if you want to work in a poxy job paying minimum wage then that is your right. I have been there, realised I was wasting my life and went out and got myself a wonderful career earning lots of cash.

Where do you get 1 1/2 hours from? I'm not always working when the store closes. Perhaps once or twice a week. And when I am there at closing we usually get out the door 15 mins after closing. Also, if you take into account all the brews I've been to make, the quick fag breaks I take and the chats I have the the lady in the cash office maybe it turns out they are over paying me!! And finally, if I earn a lot more than £437 a month thank you very much!!
Oh, and I love my job too :-D0 -
