It is a fact of retail life that the workers know that if a store closes at 5pm (or whatever) then they have to spend at least 10 minutes UNPAID after the shift ends tidying up, waiting for stragglers, putting tills away etc.
This was the reason I did the morning shift. My time to finish was 2pm and I was out the door by 2.01pm. The poor sods who worked until the end sometimes had to faff about for half hour without an extra pay.

I have a second job on Saturdays working in a shop. We close at 5.30 but if a customer is in the shop we have to let them continue trying on clothes until they are ready to leave, then we have to close up, tidy up, vacuum etc. Sometimes it's 6pm before we can leave, but we only get paid to 5.30.

The shop opens at 9.30 but we are told we must be there for 9.20...and we don't start getting paid until 9.30.

i understand that you are not the 24/7 but i find this appaulling that argos cant even fufill a full days trading with the very rude and unplesant staff however i was in telford argos the other day and i was being served 5 mins after they closed and the staff were so nice

obviously it was not a store where djb worked

Oh ha ha ha, i'm laughing deep down.

Come and work for Argos and do a full day of none stop serving, THEN you can come to me and say comments like this, and see how you like it when you're there well beyond well closing time unpaid.

Until that time happens darcyvuqua keep your nice comments to yourself.

Regardless of what job anyone does there will be some cause to moan, so it doesn't matter what job anyone does.

Granted this may be the case, but that doesn't give you reason to be rude to customers, if you don't like the job your doing, do something you DO like doing, customers aren't interested in your sob stories, a customer wants to buy a product at a designated time prior to what the store advertises its doors close at. Regardless of low pay, grumpy managers, or your home.

If a store says 5pm we close, a customer would assume that the store closes at 5pm, REGARDLESS. If you need time to till up before you get out, its a simple enough method really, you alter the closing time of the store to best accomodate you. lets say 4.30.

What you DONT do, is preach "erm Ive got a home to go to you know", or especially "Come and work for Argos and do a full day of non stop serving, THEN you can complain".

Customers TOO have got homes to go to, and anyone who has spent a whole day shopping around will rely on the time of closing for each store they visit, that I might add is printed in BOLD writing, ommitting any small print like "Due to staff having lives, we close our doors 10 minutes earlier than the designated time"

It is not the fault of a customer that you are working unpaid overtime, thats an issue you bring up with your boss, or you grab your coat and leave dot on 5pm.

You are within your rights to tell a customer at 5pm "sorry were closed", but not half an hour earlier than is advertised to the general public, quoting "well we got homes to go to, we dont get paid after 5pm and we gotta clean up"

Fortunatley I wouldnt touch Argos with a bargepole, mainly because they employ staff with an attitude problem like the one your portraying.

Well decided to ring Argos today, when i told them what happened they were really nice and apoligised. They are contacting the store to find out why they shut before they were supposed to. They also told me they have to serve customers up until the last second they are not allowed to refuse entry to the store until the exact time shown on the opening times.

I used to work as a Sales Advisor for New Homes and was regularly driven mad by the 'carpet treaders' that would come into 'look' at the showhome 5 minutes before I was due to close. They would wander round the various showhomes criticising the decor etc and then come back to me with various questions and having no intention of buying.

The thing that made this all the more frustrating was that once they had gone I had to go into each showhome (sometimes up to 5 homes) switching each light off individually and making sure that the cushions and beds were tidy etc, then more often than not I would have a journey of up to an hour to get home :o.

By careful questioning when they came onto the complex I got used to these types and would politely say that the complex was closing at Xtime so they knew to 'get a move on' . Obviously if someone was a genuine purchaser then I would stay until necessary.

Nowadays, if I am going to buy something which is going to take a while to do I would never dream of going in late to the store as I know they need to get home.

Now I see what all the sales reps thought when I went into show homes! They never paid any attention to me.

(PS I didn't go in 5 mins before closing)

No but I can see where they were going with their few very direct questions. When I didn't commit on the answers they decided i wasn't serious!
