I went into a chip shop a number of years ago and said "I'll have a bag of chips please" to which the response was "Sorry, we close in quarter of an hour."

Makes you wonder why they were open!

I thought it was a reasonable question. All it takes is a bit of planning rather than leaving everything until the very last minute or at least make sure you have the item to cook in before buying the food.

If I'd said "there, there, Argos are such !!!!!!!! I'm sure if you write to their Head Office and tell them what happened they'll send you some vouchers for compensation" presumably this would meet with your approval?

So do you consider the following particularly helpful then?

obviously it was not a store where djb worked

I think the above comment to be most unpleasant, especially after djb politely and courteously went to the time and trouble to explain why Argos was closed a few minutes early.

Personally I would have gone to Argos first as well - to be absolutely sure I had the necessary equipment.

yes but when the store states closed at 4;30 you would expect it to close at 4;30 if you bought a tin of beans with it being 32p got to the till and was 50p would that be right then no it would not!!!!!!!!

Probably because it's easy to lug a couple of food items around first, then collect the heavy item?

Similar story (sorry to go off the OPs topic) when I went into a chip shop 35 minutes before it shut.
There was a sad looking sausage and nothing else on the hotplate thing.
I asked "what have you got?"
To be told "Only that and I'm not cooking anything else"

    Customer service at its best!

(I didn't spend any money there)

It is a fact of retail life that the workers know that if a store closes at 5pm (or whatever) then they have to spend at least 10 minutes UNPAID after the shift ends tidying up, waiting for stragglers, putting tills away etc.
This was the reason I did the morning shift. My time to finish was 2pm and I was out the door by 2.01pm. The poor sods who worked until the end sometimes had to faff about for half hour without an extra pay.
  • Years ago when I worked in a bar, we were paid to 11 every night and the bar closed at 10:30. Some nights we would be gone by 11, others no chance. Today in our computerised systems, work is detailed to the minute and thus these issues are abound. When will the managers realise that if they paid until time x, staff would be more willing to stay on and serve the late comers. Mum used to work for a Mr Marks years back, and they always paind their staff after the store closed for a period. Everyone entered work together, worked most of the day, then closed and went home together..

Now as we moved to a person focused customer facing environment, we find that the till girl wants to rush off the instant the shift is over. Personally I do not blame her, but the managers and fat cats
