Simple answer to the closing dilemma - if staff are contracted to work till 5pm, then stores could advertise that they close at 4.30 or 4.45pm, thereby both allowing staff time to finish, and not misleading the public. No-one really cares what time a store closes as long as they know!
As for the cooker - Sainsburys are open today if your one sells the cookers that someone suggested.0 -
I worked in a bank a few years back and we were contracted to work until 5pm and the branch shut at 5pm. That meant we had to tidy tills, lock them in the vault do our security checks and sign out all in our own time.
The worse example of unpaid overtimes is when we had a customer come in with hundreds of pounds in coins at 4.50 and he insisted on counting them all into bags (in a mildly intoxicated state) , on that occasion we were there until well gone 6 and the customer offered us all a drink in the local pub to apologise...and we accepted!I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I dont have a cooker as it broke and cant afford a new one so reserved a slow cooker which i was due to pick up today from Argos, so decided to go shopping and get things for a stew as we've had to live off microwave food so wanted something different.
On my reservation it said it needed to be picked up before 5pm on 31st Dec so i assumed it ment the store was open til 5pm but when i arrived at 4.25pm the staff told me they were shut and refused to serve me.
Looked on the door and it said they shut at 4.30pm when pointing this out was told very rudily it doesnt matter that its not due to shut for 5 more minutes as they can stop serving before that time.
Got i am so angry went all that way and brought all that food for nothing!!
Why open til 4.30pm i you are going to stop serving before then!!
Its no wonder shops are going into administration
Why didn't you go to Argos before you went shopping for the food?Gwlad heb iaith, gwlad heb galon0 -

It was the ross-on-wye store, to buy you have to reserve it as they dont actually keep the stock there (apart from a few toys and console games) so they knew i would be in and out within no time.
it was obvious i wasnt going to stand and browse at nothing.
surely it was a mistake on the argos website to say you had until 5pm to collect it when it was nye and they could be closing early,0 -
If there's a sign on the door saying open till 4:30 - they should stay open till 4:30, if there are browsers who stand at the catalogues till 4:45 - they shouldn't be served - politely be told the store is closed and to foxtrot oscar.
and the bank that employs people till 5 and the bank closes at 5 - all i can suggest is if tills are not sorted and the fire doors aren't locked etc. then leave... your on a contract that pays till 5, i'd love to see them fire you for leaving - im sure they'd have a legal battle on there hands.0 -
xmas hours are always different. i did the same thing on xmas eve and rushed there at around 3 only for it to be heaving and them not closing till around 6. maybe they shut early so that the people instore can order?!
shame their website doesnt have xmas hours on tho.0 -

I think the point is, that she had already bought the food and was counting on a nice meal that night.I like my money right where I can see it - hanging in my closet.;)0
