Here we get the 12 week scan and the 20 anomal scan - no nuchal fold scan unless you want to pay for it yourself (I think it was about £120 or £160 - I forget!) and to me that is far more important than knowing the sex surely?
I'm right on the border of 2 counties (well actually 3...) and in my county I think they will tell you the sex at the 20 weeks if you ask - but in MK general they will not. On the grounds that there WAS an increase in certain minorities in the population who were aborting the babies if they were girls... Sad but true. And because they cannot discriminate against one group over another they have stopped telling EVERYONE the sex.
There if you want to know the sex you have to go private (and it costs more than £50!)
In honesty I don't think the army housing will move them until the baby is born regardless as sexing scans are never 100% accurate :) Why not spend the £50 on something for the baby? Money towards new carseat maybe?

i dont understand the need to move house if the baby is a boy? like others have said baby will most likely be in mum and dads room until at least 6 months and after that i'm sure could share with the sister. and scans often mistake girls for boys its not 100% accurate.

Inverness hospital do not tell you the sex of the baby even if you beg (unless there is something wrong with the baby)

Yip we have to resort to old wives tales here!lol..but I tell ya this one works!

Took a good twenty minutes to get my baby to be in the right position so they could tell the gender! Luckily it was a private scan (I couldn't wait till 21 weeks!), so didn't cost the NHS anything. Babies aren't always in the right position and can take a lot of prodding and poking to move around. I think it is fairer to have a flat fee for finding out the gender, than it be free for most, but more expensive if the baby isn't playing ball.

Personally, I'd prefer there to be no gender determination on the NHS, but the resources put into giving emergency scans for problems. Waiting a week for an emergency scan isn't good.

Ditto. And in the area that I am in, you don't get told the sex if for any reason you have to have a scan for medical reasons later in the pregnancy and the reasons cited are the same reason that the OP has said the hospital in their area.

Personally I waited and didn't pay to find out (which isn't guaranteed anyway and you have to sign a disclaimer should they get it wrong - imagine bonding with your 'blue or pink' bump only to get a surprise in the delivery room!!! the shock would bring on PND in some cases I fear). It concerns me that we don't get a 20 week scan in Scotland but only because it's a long wait from 12 weeks to 40 weeks and it would be nice to check the health of the baby. Personally I couldn't give a toss what sex my bump was so long as it was healthy and I would think the same again should I get pregnant again. You take your chances when you concieve and stressing about rooms etc really isn't going to help. If there is such an issue then personally I wouldn't get pregnant again. I am in no way religious at all but I firmly believe that children are a blessing - whatever sex they are.

so you are telling me for a nurse to say either 'its a boy' or 'girl' it is right to charge £50 that is more than a whole days pay for some people!!!!!!

Do you think it's right for a highly trained sonographer to spend extra time with equipment which costs more than some people earn in their lifetime, to detect something which isn't medically necessary and isn't normally looked at for no charge at all? To do this for everyone at every appointment could well take up an extra two or three hours every day !

Very few people NEED to know the sex of their child , for those who do for MEDICAL reasons then there are accurate tests available.
For those who WANT to know then they can choose to pay if they wish the situation would only be disgusting if patients were given no choice. !!

The reasons you have specified aren't relevant at all. Current recommendation is that a new baby shares a room with it's parents for six months as it is there's a much greater chance of cot death if a baby is sleeping in a seperate room.

i asked at my 22 week scan did they know the sex and she said she did and she even got another sonographer in to double check, it was a little boy. This was my only NHS scan, i went private for my pregnancy care and my consultant who scanned me every 3 weeks would never confirm that it was a boy! she refused to tell me! but i would still go back to her every time.
