i would like to add that for my brother a baby is not a fashion item nor is it a matter of its not perfect lets abort

 It isn't that simple for someone to end at pregnancy at 20+ weeks, just because it isn't 'perfect'. To carry a baby for 20+ weeks and find out at a scan that it has serious abnormalities is a devestating experience

  • Sorry to butt in but with the Scotland and not all health boards doing the 20 week scan thing, NHS Lothian are now doing ones at 20 weeks. Not very helpful if you're not in that area but it's a start.
Got married 23rd May 2009, many thanks to all on the Weddings and Anniversaries board for their help and support!

currently has a three bedroom house his 5 year old is not allowed to share due to medical reasons and the army will not give him a four bedroom unless the baby happens to be a boy so as you can see if it is just a case of wait and see they will be moving house with 3 children with one of which is a new born i thought the new arrival would be hard work with the moving of house on top of it

The Army won't give him a house till baby is born anyway - because a) the scan could be wrong, b) they recommend baby shares with parents for 6 months and c) (and I know this sounds horrible) babies don't always survive. I've known born babies who are in SCBU and have council and Forces refuse to change housing until baby has left to come home

My 8yo boy and 5yo girl despite having their own bedrooms are frequently found curled up asleep together. No reason why baby can't share with it's older sister for several years and as previously said, last time I looked FSID recommended that babies sleep in their parents room for the first 6 months.

    Nope it's over and under 140 !!!

I am always right when I predict!! (Well I keep quiet when I'm not!!) :rotfl: :rotfl:

    OC

At which week? The heartbeat changes from what I've read. Mine was 160bpm at 8 weeks but I read it goes down after about 9 weeks.

I also am PG, and my hospital gives us the 12-week scan and nuchal testing, and the 20-week anomaly scan, but won;t tell yout he sex at all (big Asian and Muslim catchment round here too).

Because we'd had a miscarriage last time, we wanted an early scan to be sure things were OK and to stop me going crazy with worry. We couldn;t get that on the NHs and travelled for a two-hour round trip and paid £120 for a private scan.

It wasn;t necessary medically as the baby would either be OK or not, so why should the NHS pay for it?

Same as sexing - it's not medically important, and OP whatever you think about them needing to know you are wrong, they WANT to, which is different to NEEDING to.

    It's not a rip-off, it's a bargain price for a private scan.

We don't get the option up here.
I did not, and would not, want to know the sex anyway.

I wanted to know ... does that make me a bad mum? :rotfl:

At the start of the scan my baby put his testicles on display and left us in no doubt, even the sonographer laughed :D

They usually say they are about 70% certain and don't take what they say as a definite 'you are having a boy' etc. and they warn you that they do get it wrong sometimes.

When I had my eldest the sonographer asked did I want to know but just 8 months later when my sister had her scan the hospital policy had changed and they had stopped telling people. It had changed back again before I had my second child. In the meantime my sister paid to have a private sexing scan elsewhere.

ive never heard of nhs charging for sexing scan! i know some places wont tell you (peterborough didnt until last year) and round here a private scan costs around £85

I had all 4 of my babies at Peterborough, and was asked if I wanted to know the sex at all the scans! We saw for ourselves at the 2nd scan, but for the next 2 I made a point of telling the sonographer that I didn't want to know, and to not tell hubby either. One of my good friends is a midwife there, and she has said that the sonographers can sometimes opt to not tell certain 'ethnic minorities'.
