They shouldnt charge to tell you the sex, they usually charge for photos though.

When I was pregnant with our third, I asked the midwife if I would be told at the scan and she said I'd have to get my consultant's permission first.
She said they'd had two mum's in recent years who'd left their child at the hospital after giving birth, because they'd been told it was one sex and it had turned out to be wrong. She said they just couldn't accept the baby belonged to them, as they'd been so certain about what they were having.
No mention of ethnicity at all - just parents struggling with their little 'boy' being a girl, or vice versa.
Anyway, I asked my consultant, who was happy to leave a note on my records. He did this as we already had one of each and he could see we weren't bothered either way but just wanted to know.
I don't think I'd have paid £50 to find out though - I wasn't that keen to know!0 -

The money earned from these scans goes back to maternity services. It pays for - extra CTG (fetal heart monitors) or other equipment, training courses for midwives to attend, improvements to waiting areas. Basically things that the NHS Trust usually has no money to buy. These funds are essential for the current cash strapped maternity services. Personally I don't think sonographers should be wasting valuable time satisfying the whim of parents when scan appointments are so difficult to get and even emergencies have to wait several days due to the amount of scheduled scans they do.Debtfree JUNE 2008 - Thank you MSE:T0

Thats so funny!!! What on earth was the point in saying that :rotfl:0 -
I really don't think its right that they charge for this - its not as if it takes much longer to look for it considering they should be doing a thorough check of the baby anyway.
My hosp won't tell at all, didn't bother me tho as I didn't want to know either time.0 -

It can take them quite some time to see if the baby is lying so it's not always easy, and then it is a waste of time. Why are people so obsessed with knowing anyway? We want ours to be a surprise. DFW Nerd Club member 023...DFD 9.2.2007 :heartpuls married 21 6 08 :A Angel babies' birth dates 3.10.08 * 4.3.11 * 11.11.11 * 17.3.12 * 2.7.12 :heart2: My live baby's birth date 22 7 09 :heart2: I'm due another baby at the end of July 2014! :j

I think some people are just really nosy! I wanted to know with both mine and some people thought it was a shame that we didn't want a 'surprise', but the whole 'there were two people here a minute ago and now there are three' thing was overwhelming enough for us and we didn't feel 'cheated' at all.
Having said that. We only asked if the sonographer could tell the sex after all the other checks were done. If there'd been difficulty cos of the way the baby was lying we wouldn't have been bothered, or pursued things further or expected the sonograpgher to spend an age looking. In reality it was a minute or so extra.
As I said - I'm just VERY bad at waiting!0 -
I was so busy looking at the little heart beating I hadn't seen what my wife had, that she was a she. And of course, as first time parents, we were silly enough to pay for a 4D scan later.Been away for a while.0

That was the impression we were given.
It was made very clear to us that they would not spend extra time looking for the sex but would tell us if it was obvious during the normal scan.
They said it was more likely a boy would 'announce himself' and if it was a girl, we'd be less likely to get an answer.
As it was, dd was lay in an ideal position.
We didn't want to know with out first or second child but did with the third.
We already had one if each, so it was no big deal, and I honestly don't know if we'd have wanted to know if we'd had two girls or two boys.0
