My DD has a gender inherited condition and I didn't find out whether she was going to be a boy or girl at the scan. When we were having our 3rd I didn't find out either even though we knew about the condition. It wouldn't have made any difference. So no it's not important.

Anyhow back to the OP, it's not worth the money to find out...it is never going to be 100% accurate and DHE will not give a bigger house on the outcome of a scan.

  • Newsflash, Fly Baby - anomaly scans are to find out if your baby is healthy, they are not for waving at your baby and getting cutesy pictures.

I had a private scan at 26 weeks to determine the sex as I wanted to know for sure. It was worth every penny. Get over yourselves!

In my NHS area there is a policy not to tell you the sex of the baby - if you want to find out you require to pay for a private scan with a private scanning company, prices around here start at approx £80.

I'm not entirely sure why this is - but possibly because they scan between 14-16 weeks and it's not the most accurate time to sex a baby.

same as my hospital, but i knew it was a girl... just instinct i guess

So you spent money on something that others get for free? Hardly something to be proud of. :)

Scans ARE an amazing experience for the parents as well as a necessary precaution measure. I don't see why they shouldn't be both.

Why would hospitals offer prints? Why do they hire photographers come to the maternity wards to take pictures of newborns? Why do they team with the Bounty? Why do nurses coo at the newborn baby? They should just be doing their job and forget the sentiments, right?
  • No I spent money on a 4D scan which no one gets on the NHS  Proud? LOL. I enjoyed it but I didn't say I was proud!

You can't compare the post-birth stuff to ante-natal care. It's apples and oranges. And they team up with Bounty because Bounty PAY for a presence. Do you think Bounty give you a mother-to-be and essentials-for-a-new-mum pack out of the goodness of their hearts? Because they care?
  • And yes scans are amazing, there's nothing like seeing your baby for the first time :) I felt lucky to enjoy mine as I've read that some sonographers are particularly miserable! But however lovely it is it is not about you, it's about ensuring the health of the baby and checking for things like spina bifida, not looking at their genitals. I don't agree that the NHS should NOT determine the sex, but I don't agree that you have the absolute right to demand it either.

To be fair it wouldn't really be a huge loss financially or otherwise to the NHS to reveal the sex free of charge-if the baby is lying awkwardly they can simply say so.

But its perfectly legal for a hospital to refuse and then to charge for that information because the anomaly scan is for abnormalities only and the sex of the baby falls into the sexing scan category-i think its a bit of a rip off personally but the £50 is a fair price compared to what some areas charge for these sexing scans.

And if you opt to have a private anomaly scan as i did for £120 you get the lot including a lovely dvd and lots of photos so thats another option.

The hospital don't hire photographers to come to the maternity wards and in the opinion of most midwives they, and the bounty lady are a nuisance and interfere with the intimate bonding of parent and newborn. And if you've ever spent a great deal of time on a post natal ward you might notice that the midwives and nurses on duty don't have time to coo at the newborn, they have jobs to do and very limited time to do them...
A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...
Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.

  • Krystal do you know if Bounty pay the hospital a fee or do they (hospital) get a cut of orders taken?

Bounty strike me as an odd organisation that exists purely to separate parents and cash - whether it's getting you to buy Comfort because of your free sample, taking cute pics of your newborn, or distributing out-dated information on infant weaning - what do they actually DO?

And yes you are right, the only person who cooed over my baby was the wonderful woman who bought me some lunch, she spent longer with me than any midwife did, I was a home birth that transferred and it was as if they didn't know I was there!

Those photographers were awful imo! The ward is always busy, people working, mums tired and then someone coming around to offer you a 'wonderful' photograpy experience which when i gave in with my first born was terribly rushed and the photos were awful.

Better to invest in a decent camera and capture your baby at their best.
