Those photographers were awful imo! The ward is always busy, people working, mums tired and then someone coming around to offer you a 'wonderful' photograpy experience which when i gave in with my first born was terribly rushed and the photos were awful.

Better to invest in a decent camera and capture your baby at their best.

I didn't use the photographer's services because the picture that lady took was really ugly. I am regretting it now though. Ugly or not on her first day of life, that would have been my daughter's first picture.

Unless you knew your family had gender specific inherited conditions - then it's pretty important

In which case you should be reffered to geneticist, and a obstetrician.

One of my friends was even trained as a "hospital babycarer" or something - her only duty was to spend time with children at the hospital, to help them feel happy and safe while waiting for treatment, to entertain them so that they don't get scared of doctors. I always viewed is as a parent's responsibility yet she was trained at the expense of the hospital and she is not paid wages.

This service is really not essential, IMO, albeit of course it is very nice to have such a helper.

If you had ever cared for a chiild or a family who are coping with a terminal illness then you would know that posts like are essential.

i thinksome people are getting a bit carried away. the original post was regarding whether an NHS hospital should charge for telling you the gender of the baby. somewhere along the line everyones has got on their soap boxes and wandered off at a tangent.

Some hospitals tell some don't - for various reasons I'm sure not limited some minorities not wanting girls, some people suiing when the baby wasn't what they were told (and this is relatively common i'm told), sometimes the baby just isnt lying right - legs tightly clamped together is gonna cause some difficulties. At the end of the day if you REALLY want to know and the NHS hospital won't/can't tell you then pay for a private scan, otherwise I'm afraid you'll have to wait a few more months to find out - and it wont be the end of the world I'm sure.

Who said anything about the terminal illness? Her job is being in the waiting area and in the doctor's office and entertain kids.

And forgive me, God save us all from having to deal with serious health conditions - but what essential is good medical care and everything else can be handled by parents, if no other help is available.

And I never once met such an entertainer in a hospital - maybe it was an inititative of my friend's particular hospital?

In my NHS area there is a policy not to tell you the sex of the baby - if you want to find out you require to pay for a private scan with a private scanning company, prices around here start at approx £80.

I'm not entirely sure why this is - but possibly because they scan between 14-16 weeks and it's not the most accurate time to sex a baby.

My daughter is now 18 and am in the same NHS area as r.mac but private scans were unheard of in my day. As I had an amnio and was in and out of hospital the sex of my daughter was known and on my notes but it also stated that the mother didn't want to know. One of the nurses told me after that she never looks at these particular notes just incase she let it slip out that it was a boy or girl.

As regards the OP, I wouldn't have put £50 as being a rip off if that is the information you want to know.

fly baby you really are getting off the OP's post.

Question: Is £50 a rip off to know sex of baby? answer: yes/no.

We aren't talking about NHS srevices as a whole.

The majority of people don't seem to think its a rip off and I'm with them. Its not essential to know the sex of your baby and as previously said if a hospital won't tell for whatever reasons, thats their perogative, or if the sonographer can't tell you then thats the end of it. Pay for a private scan and be done with it. Or in this case pay the £50 to the NHS and be done with it.

In Oxford you can find out for free - they told us on the 30th but did ask us twice if we were sure we wanted to know :)
They also stressed several times that it's not 100% accurate - it never is... but they were happy that it looked very like a girl :) And they explained what they look at to sex the baby and showed it on the screen etc...
Would I rather have the nuchal fold scan instead of finding out the sex for free? Yep... Alas we don't get that here so guess that's a trade of...
