hey guys, my brother is expecting his 3rd child and are due for a scan on new years eve the thing is he has been chatting in and around his friends and they said that the hospital they will be having there scan will not tell them the sex of the child unless they pay £50 they have one of each (boy 5 and girl 2) and not bothered either way as long as fingers crossed it is healthy they would just like to prepare for its arrival!
my question is that is this even legal!

Maybe the rules are not to tell the sex, but you can pay £50 for a private gender scan?0

Tell them to buy white or lemon stuff. Chances are the sex determining scan could be wrong and they'd have bought blue and ended up having a girl.
I had 3 boys. With my 4th baby I still wouldn't have wanted to know what I was having beforehand.0 -
I've heard that some hospitals refuse to tell you, but not that they charege you to tell you!
tried googling it and didn't come up with much either...
Why not try calling the hospital and hearing it from the horses mouth as it were?
Good luck to your Bro!

ive never heard of nhs charging for sexing scan! i know some places wont tell you (peterborough didnt until last year) and round here a private scan costs around £850

I think the key here is 'chatting in and around with friends', when people talk, all sorts of wild and wonderfulthings get said- I would get on to the hospital and get it direct from them. They will tell you what's what. When you have a baby, everyone likes to chip in their tuppence worth, and most often, people spout a lot of outdated rubbish and moreover fail to realise that times have changed.
I've never heard of a charge to tell you the sex - although I do know private places can charge around the £50 mark for an anatomy scan, but I don't see the point if you get one anyway around the 20 week mark... I am due to have my 20 week scan which is detailed in my file as the 'anatomy scan' in mid-February, and I know we have been told in advance that for print outs it will cost £1.00 per picture/print-out, which I understand is standard practice, but I've never heard of anyone charging to tell you the sex. Geton to the hospital, they will put you straight.0 -
Why is it a rip off? The scan is to try and detect any abnormalities not to determine the sex of the child. Why should the NHS waste time (which is money) just to please the whim of the parents. Sometimes if the baby is in an awkward position it can take ages to find the sex of the child this could then hold up the whole clinic.
If they went for a private scan to determine sex it would cost about £100 .
It is voluntary to pay the £50 so not a rip off at all.

Some hospitals no longer give the sex in case the mother aborts it as a result of it not being what she wants. However, I cant think of a reason for charging for you the sex given that it is generally standard policy to tell parents if they want to know at the 20 week scan. It is strange that you havent been told about this policy. At my hospital unless you actually say the words' what is the sex' they wont even mention it. I was told this right from the start.Proud Mummy to Leila aged 1 whole year:j0
