Why should the NHS waste time (which is money) just to please the whim of the parents. Sometimes if the baby is in an awkward position it can take ages to find the sex of the child this could then hold up the whole clinic.
If they went for a private scan to determine sex it would cost about £100 .
It is voluntary to pay the £50 so not a rip off at all.

Every hospital has different policies and different charges in place. My local hospital charges £3.50 for a scan photo and a couple of years ago wouldn't tell you the sex of the baby but now they do. The £50 charge is probably not going into the pocket of the person doing the scan but will go into the unit and pay for things they can't get funding to cover such as toys in the waiting area or a drinks machine etc... They have a choice whether to pay the money or wait and see, either way they'll find out in the end...A very proud Mummy to 3 beautiful girls... I do pity my husband though, he's the one to suffer the hormones...My Fathers Daughter wrote: »Krystal is so smart and funny and wonderful I am struck dumb in awe in her presence.

They have probably fixed a 'private fee' for the service as they have considered that this is not a part of the core NHS service and so patients should pay for it.
I actually agree with this system. The scan is for abnormalities etc, anything else such as gender is an optional extra and the cost is xx, so you can pay or wait till you deliver."This is a forum - not a support group. We do not "owe" anyone unconditional acceptance of their opinions."0
