A lot of the time the rise in price of something is not gradual, penny here, penny there, it's like 40/50 pence rise overnight on some things.

  • Lidl washing powder it good. (and their chocolate is lovely too - with hazelnut for 39p)

I though washing powder weight sizes were standardised? Are other makes doing the same?

How much is the LIDL washing powder and what size is the box etc, how many washes. I've never used it, always used to use Bold one with Lavender and Cammomile etc then downgraded to Tesco then saw this and think I might give LIDL a go. Cheers for any info.

  • I'm going to check the price and size tomorrow. I haven't bought it since before Christmas. I use half the amount on the instructions if the clothes only need freshening up so it lasts ages.

If you have the space, the huge "professional" size washing powders work out cheaper in Makro, and they normally have one brand on offer each time I go in.

I like the lavendar Bold so normally wait till it's on offer and stock up. My garage smells lovely now :D

Pity, nearest Makro to me is Aberdeen, 100 odd miles away. I could mix some Bold with a cheaper powder perhaps, half and half. Checked out Lidl today for the powder, works at 83p a kilo I think. Bold is like twice that, Tesco one is £1.25 a kilo.

I always buy Tesco own brand washing powder. Because I like to have Bio, Non Bio and colour I usually buy the small 1.15kg boxes which each do 15 washes. Average prices is around £1.62.

Today however I noticed the box only said 10 washes for the same price. I looked at the box weight and it's now only 1kg. So the volume has decreased by 13%, the no. of washes per kg has gone down by 1/3 and the price has remained the same.

To summarise if you buy the small boxes from now on you will be paying 16.2p per wash as opposed to 10.8p per wash.

Also noticed on line that the larger box is now only 3kg and 30 washes down from 3.45kg and 45 washes.

I have emailed them to tell them they are ripping us off.

I noticed Tesco dramatically shrunk the size of their value washing powder too a few weeks ago too.

    I do this too becles
I can get the same results from a minute amount of good stuff as I can from using the shop's own
One large box will last me at least 6 months :)

Me too! Buy own brand Makro stuff. Although storage can be a problem as the box is massive!
