It's not only Tesco who's changing the washing powder box size but leaving the price the same. Persil and Arial have done it too - I buy the larger boxes which used to be 5.5kg now only 5kg. In Australia (my home country) this happened with soups (dropped from 440gram size to 400gram etc), and lots of other canned & bagged products so I'm sure it will slowly but surely happen here as well. Never a reduction in price, just a reduction in size!
  • Well, we were warned about the power of the big supermarkets, just look at the petrol situation. Only 1 station now between Huddersfield and there were 14 at one time

YOU MUST EITHER USE OR LOOSE YOUR LOCAL SHOPS AS THEY ARE CLOSING BY THE 100O`s EACH WEEK.

You have been warned again. I would not go near Tesco if it was free.

    WHAT NEXT

    Thank you for your email.

The European Union are working with Laundry Detergent manufacturers to reduce the amount of chemicals in the environment. To this end the amount of bulking agents (those parts of the powder that carry the cleaning product) has been reduced - effectively making the powder more concentrated.

Over the coming months all washing powders will reduce in size by approximately 10%. Ariel, Daz, Bold and Own Label products have already moved.

The amount of doses in each box hasn't reduced, just the amount of powder needed to do each wash.

If you have any further queries please do not hesitate to contact us at

    Kind Regards

Now that doesnt suprise me since they dont warn us on the box to use less powder so i have used the same amount as always and i have noticed a lot of white film around the door of my washer. I even had to get MrJudi to rod my washer waste pipe on Monday cause it was so gummed up with washing powder. Which is something he hasnt had to do for years.

I always buy Tesco own brand washing powder. Because I like to have Bio, Non Bio and colour I usually buy the small 1.15kg boxes which each do 15 washes. Average prices is around £1.62.

Today however I noticed the box only said 10 washes for the same price. I looked at the box weight and it's now only 1kg. So the volume has decreased by 13%, the no. of washes per kg has gone down by 1/3 and the price has remained the same.

To summarise if you buy the small boxes from now on you will be paying 16.2p per wash as opposed to 10.8p per wash.

Also noticed on line that the larger box is now only 3kg and 30 washes down from 3.45kg and 45 washes.

I have emailed them to tell them they are ripping us off.
Happened with lots of facial soap bars, too. It wasn't until I bought a bar of Dove Cream soap in USA that I realised ours are nowadays much smaller than they used to be. I'm guessing here, but I think they used to 130grammes but are now 100 (two pack - I checked one). Those in the USA were startlingly large. Seen it with Sainsbury's 'petticoat' shortbread three or four years ago: went from something like 100g packs to 90 and at the same time the price increased by 2 or three pence a pack. It happens everywhere. Next thing you know they'll be marketing the old size at the new price and call it 25% free or whatever. Sneaky ghits.
    Waddle you do eh?
  • Well I remember as a child noticing that sweets (in particular Polos) used to have a few extra sweets "Free" just when the price went up and that these extra sweets would soon be removed, but the price would not drop. Me and my best mate noticed this when we were still at primary school and things have clearly not improved!

How much does a Mars Bar weigh? I'm sure I recall when they REDUCED to something like 62.5g and they now weigh something like 49g (I don't know, I don't buy sweets these days).

I buy washing powder at Costco. Got 9kg of Ariel Colour for about eleven quid. Not bad.
  • If you read the packaging carefully, you will see that the number of washes has remained exactly the same.
Over the past 6 years, manufacturers have consistently reduced the amount of detergent required per wash (and altered dosage amount at the same time) in an attempt to improve the effect on the environment through:
    1. Smaller packaging
    2. Smaller amount of detergent needed/less waste
So you are better off as you are carrying less powder home and so have less chance of hurting your back!
Its a good thing (as long as you use the updated dosage)

I got fed up with the price of washing powder, but my parents go on a day trip to france every two months and myself and husband go twice a year. Either my parents or I bring back 2 X 84 tablets of ariel and 3 X 3ltr of lavender comfort each time I need any and it works out at £12.00 each time for the lot.

An excuse to get some booze at the same time!!!

Before any one starts having a go at tesco, i would like to tell you that all the companys are doing this not just tesco. And the reason this is being done is because of New EU rules. i know about this as i work for a supermarket.

I always use liquid wash rather than bottles ever since I had a problem with faded/bleached patches appearing on clothes when using powder. All called one of the helplines (can't remember which brand), and was told that this is because of bleaching agents in the powder. I was informed that all makes/types of powder had the potential to cause this, but that liquids do not cause bleaching agents and therefore this problem will not occur.

Ever since, I have used Tesco (or other own brand) Bio or Non-bio liquid in bottles.

As I am currently on a 'money diet', I thought I would try the Tesco value liquid for a change, but on close scrutiny of the shelf label, was surprised to see that although the price of a bottle was cheaper, it comes in 1L bottles and the price per Litre (£1.58) was higher than the standard 'Tesco Bio' 1.5L (£1.54).

I know that this is not a lot of difference, but the point is - where is the 'Value' in the value product???

I didn't compare the dosing instructions of the 2 Tescos products, but I know from buying the equivalent 'Smart Price' detergent in Asda recently, that it was a higher dose per wash, which again meant that it was worse value than the standard own brand equivalent.

I might just send Tesco an email about this and see what they have to say.
