Tesco & it's own brand washing powder.

Options
I always buy Tesco own brand washing powder. Because I like to have Bio, Non Bio and colour I usually buy the small 1.15kg boxes which each do 15 washes. Average prices is around £1.62.

Today however I noticed the box only said 10 washes for the same price. I looked at the box weight and it's now only 1kg. So the volume has decreased by 13%, the no. of washes per kg has gone down by 1/3 and the price has remained the same.

To summarise if you buy the small boxes from now on you will be paying 16.2p per wash as opposed to 10.8p per wash.

Also noticed on line that the larger box is now only 3kg and 30 washes down from 3.45kg and 45 washes.

I have emailed them to tell them they are ripping us off.

I wonder if the big brands have done this too. Own brands usually follow the market leaders with regard to pack size.

It's common practice. Companies do it so they don't have to raise the price, then a majority of people won't notice any difference.

Next they'll advertise a "new larger pack" and hope nobody notices the higher price

i noticed this a few weeks back. all the brands of soap powder have done it. i showed my mum the pack and made i really big point in the supermarket about how they are ripping us off , hoping we won't notice. i got some funny looks but nearly everyone then looked at the box size. so i was pleased with myself.

Yeah and today is the day they announce their profits and figures have risen - no wonder when they have cut the sizes of their boxes of washing powder!

I have checked the pack I bought before Christmas and it is the smaller size. I am sure the one before that was small as well. I remember thinking the box looked different.
  • Thank you for putting my mind at rest. I buy TESCO and I thought it was smaller but I had disposed of the old box so I wondered. Nice to know I'm not completely nuts!

    I've been Money Tipped!
Thanks for bringing this up. I too thought I was going mad as I felt sure that the last box of Tesco powder I bought was 3.45kg, and the one I have now is 3kg and 30 washes. B@strds. Huh, I think I'll give LIDL washing powder a go instead.  Check out Thriftylady's thread also on how Tesco is taking over the flipping country too......

Going to start making a price book, did attempt one but fell by the wayside after a few weeks.

Their stuff shoots up in price from one day to the next also. I usually buy Chocolate Break, 400g jar and it was £1.66, then it shot up to £1.92 a jar. Also used to buy a loaf at 82p, Warburtons multi seed thing, then next day it had gone up to £1.22. Just have to be hypervigilant of the costs now and make a price book.
