  • Hi I have just finished reading all the posts on here and I would be so frightened if I had that dog next door to me, and the owners sound a nasty pair as well, with their attitude. You did the right thing calling someone and I for one hopes it is assessed properly and the right decision is made, as this carry on is no way for you to be living with your little one and yourselves. I can't for the life of me see the sense is some of these posts. It doesn't sound normal behaviour to me. I wish you all the very best love and hope you get it sorted out quickly and are able to feel safe every day soon as is your right.xx
Do a little kindness every day.;)
  • Do the HA not have any responsibility for fixing fences??

Really I think the neighbour should have to do it as his dog is getting out, but if not, you coud try freecycle for some free wood or fence panels or pallets?

Have you heard any more from the community officer yet? If not chase them again :)

As for TigerLily's comments on the rotties - MrsE I think you are misunderstanding her point a little... she's not disputing that the situation was tragic, avoidable or even caused directly by the dog. She's saying the incident, though desperately tragic though it certainly is, was sensationalised to sell papers and inaccurately reported. I will be honest and say I hadn't heard about that but given my deep distrust of papers I could certainly believe it.

Yes rotties are big dogs - and they are powerful dogs. But so are GSDs, in fact all gun dogs and 75% of all working breeds. I lived next door to 2 Old English Mastiffs - one weighing in at a slender 100kg... if ever you want to see powerful jaws have a peek in the mouth of an Old English! Yet because they are relatively rare still they are expensive and so most people who have them are VERY deidicated to them. IF you ever meet one angry it's likely to be a very lasting memory... In my view a far more potentially dangerous dog than the rottie. So why not call for mastiffs to be banned or whatever? What is the difference?

    The owners.

OP please let us know what the community officer says and keep pestering them to come out and look at this dog. If you haven't heard from them by tomorrow - call the local news paper :) Bet that will get them moving!

Spot on! Yeah calling the papers is a good idea, something needs to be done, nobody should live in fear. MrsTine! Update in my PM box asap pls on the scan! lol
  • The Owners could at least keep it out of the front room when they're out
This is what i wanted them to do but they said that they weren't going to lock him up in his own house and that hes a guard dog, how can he guard if hes locked in the kitchen.

Been on at the HA about the fence, they said that because theres one already there (its about 3ft ish) then its not classed as an emergency but they will see what they can do. Freecycle wont let me join lol apprently im not good enough for them!

I tried to call the beat bobby (got number form post office) but i think i must of wrote the number down wrong because its got a funny "der der der" beep when i ring it? Dont think the police have been - they said they would ring me and they havent and i have a feeling next door will be round knocking on door - just hope its not tonight as only me and DD here, OH away with work :o( luckily my mum lives roung the corner and my sister is next street away so not as if we're isolated.

Try again tomorrow. I think i might try and book in a hotel for new years eve - dont really know what trouble they will cause if drunk AND angry
  • oh and i wasnt being rude not reading all the "rottie are/arent dangerous posts" was at work and lunch was ending lol
  • Its interesting to hear different opinions on certain breeds of dog and whether they are brutes, killers, cuddly dogs to ride on and so forth but really the breed is irrelevant.

If op has a dog threatening her in her own garden at her back door then it doesn't matter if its a terrier or st bernard. Her dd would suffer injury in an attack from a dog of any size and this is so avoidable would her neighbours use their heads.

You really have my sympathies, op and I hope you have a happy and quiet New Year with a resolution to this problem soon.

  • Ah that noise could be that you've dialled their fax number, very often they have just one or two numbers different from their phone number. I bet if you google you can get a number, like for me, Leicestershire Constabulary should bring up something (Non 999 number). I think also, write letters (Keep copies & also special/recorded delivery them) to the HA, Dog Warden, Police. Then IF something happens there's proof you've been on at them.

Go to the cop shop tomorrow & don't leave until they come back with you! I really get mad at people like this (Your neighbours)! Could you stay with your Sis or Mum NYE? I'd maybe also drop a letter on the neighbours but without knowing them it's hard to tell their reaction. Not an aggressive letter, just a final please will you restrict dog to back room etc

Will google it tomorrow when at work and call them - doubt they will be there now?

Cant stay at sisters as shes got 3 bed and 2 kiddies of her own. Mums might be an option, will ask her but i dont want to be in the way (and i have a 'bed time' at mums and at 24 i think im a bit to old to be getting told when to go to bed lol)

As both us and the neighbours have just moved in i dont really know what they are like. The village where we live is where i grew up, its a mining village and everyone knows everyone and i know the neighbours have been asking about me in the local pub (people been telling me and mentioning i need to watch them!) but neighbours are from another vilage (about 5 mile away) so no one really knows them, only what neighbours have told people. I went out of my way to be nice to them when we moved in, The women next door locked herself out and her hubby had keys at his work which is 10 mile away, my OH was driving back from work so went out of his way to pick them up for her so she didnt have to get a taxi to pick her keys up, she said thanks and slunked off but other than that i havent really spoken to her unless its to moan about something. They have a teenger and he plays his music loud so i always ask if they could turn it down (DD doesnt sleep through night as it is and i could do without people waking her up with loud music!)

Maybe its my fault? might of moaned a bit too much lol
  • I have a Rottie who likes to guard the house and garden,However my son has just moved in to a house and the neighbour has 3.They growl and try to jump the fence which is very close to the back door.

I had a word with the neighbour who owned the dogs but to no avail.

A bucket of freezing cold water soon stopped them in their tracks, now every time they bark by the fence I turn on the tap and off they go.

These dogs are very intelligent and will seek out your weakness over time.

If you get no joy out of the police phone them again to state the dog is in your garden, leave it 10 minutes then phone them again stating there is no need for them to call out as you have shot him.......I think you will then rather quickly get the attention you needed to sort the dog out.
