Yup - however there was an amuzing incident which was printed in a paper which always tickles me... it was a guy who's shed was being broken into for the umphteeth time and calling the police he told them the thieves were in the garden breaking in and was told the police had no avilable units but would be with him as soon as possible etc etc - 5 minutes later he called them back said not to worry he'd shot the thieves and hung up. Less than 5 minutes later the police were there with armed response and dogs - caught the thieves and one very angry officer walked up to the home owner and said "I thought you said to the dispatcher you'd shot them???" to which alledgedly he replied: "and I thought she said there was no-one available?"
Ah well - always makes me smile...
Chase the copper tomorrow and make sure you speak to them. Explain that you'd prefer if they could go round after new years eve as you will be on your own tomorrow night and you feel they may get threatening and you'd rather that didn't happen when you are on your own with a small child and the police already stretched to the limit, but you'd like to know when they will be going round so you can make sure you're not alone afterwardsDFW Nerd #025DFW no more! My neighbours (next road - but I use it to get to mine) were parking so badly that I could barely squeeze through (a 999 vehicle would have no chance). They were parking on both sides of a road that was too narrow to allow it.
I called the police, they were round within 30 mins max (& called me back to let me know they would be round shortly) & then called me after to tell me how they had dealt with it.
How can the police response times & case handling differ so much?0 -
OP, send all the kiddies, yours & nephews/nieces to Granny, they get the bedtime & you & Sis get a relaxing evening? lmao MrsTine I like that !
Yeah seriously get onto them tomorrow & don't give up! You can't take risks & maybe the dogs aren't that bad so the neighbours know this & know they won't hurt you so aren't doing anything about it & are just saying they're guard dogs to make sure nobody breaks in?? BUT you can't risk it.
Or maybe catch whichever neighbour is easiest, say you're sorry if there's been misunderstandings & you're a dog lover but try to explain it worries you for the dogs safety & yours? I know with some they get defensive tho & it may not work, but ya never know?
Maybe a small lie like you once saw a dog go thru single paned glass & often have worried theirs will, you'd hate to see it again, HUGE Vet bill etc window repair lol act all concerned? Or say by their own admission the dog will have the kid, and you're sure they were telling you so you'd be careful & thank them for that, but of course neither of you want that to happen & could you come to some arrangement with the fencing or the times the dogs are out or that they're muzzled?0 -
could you not contact your local MP about the situation??
Making your situation clear, that you have a small child, that you've rung the police/HA etc etc and intend to go to the papers with your story as it is literally putting yorus and your daughters life in danger if you ever were to end up face to face with the dog - ie if you accidentally went into the garden not realising the dog had gotten over the fence etc. but make it clear that they know its a guard dog etc and maybe mention that you've been wanting a fence erected and their protests about it.Time to find me again0 -
Oooo sammy that's a good idea! I hadn't even thought about that! *slaps forehead as normally that's one of my first suggestions!*

**UPDATE**
Ok i finished work early today and when i got home i had a card from the police pushed through my door asking for me to call them. Apprently they came round earlier, I wasnt in and neither was the neighbours so hes going to try and call back and catch them in but he said it would more likely be friday now. Anyway, he came at around 2:30 and i got home at 2:45 so i had only just missed him but when i got home the neighbours WERE in. Now the police said they heard the dog but didnt see it so im wondering if they saw the police and took the dog out of site. Explained to him everything thats been happening and he said he will speak to them and "lay it on thick" about prossocusion (spelling?) etc and that they are not to confront me regarding this matter as it will be dealt with in a serious matter (so he says anyway) he sounded really nice and willing to take it seriously but he said as log as they keep him in the house theres not much he can do unless i can prove he's been on the back yard (so gonna take pics) or if the dog gets out the window it will be PTS. He said he will speak to the neighbours about putting a fence up, he said it is their responsibility but that if they wouldnt then i was to call him in a few weeks and he will call the housing association and get them to do it.
Fingers crossed Friday will be the end of the problem. Wouldnt that be a great start to 2009!
Thank you everyone - ill keep you updated and happy new year0 -
Glad to hear he's a nice officer
They DO take things seriously I guess they've just been incredibly busy due to the time of year... we all know that domestic violence etc increases this time of year sadly
But it sounds like he's going to handle the situation in a manner that keeps you safe and leaves neighbours in NO doubt about the severity of the issue.
I think we all thought they couldn't do much about the dog snarling at the window and I did suspect that if it broke through the window - injury or not to someone else it would be so high risk that the police would put it down.
Definitely take pictures of it if it makes it in to your back garden - and I suspect you're right about them being in when the copper popped round - probably hiding if they knew it was a police officer and keeping the dog away too...
Fingers crossed that it will be resolved friday(guessing he won't pop round tomorrow as not only are your neighbours likely to be hungover but if he's on shift he's probably going to be dealing with domestic violence cases etc which require immediate attendance...)
Fingers crossed for you!DFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!

Thanks for updating, he seems quite positive & helpful, fingers crossed this will be the end of it. I mean if nothing else, surely they know your Daughter is scared & who wants to scare a kid!? I'd hate to think any neighbours were scared of my Dog or to develop a fear of Dogs thru my idiocy!
Happy 2009! Let's hope this is the end to it & pls keep updating!0 -

If op has a dog threatening her in her own garden at her back door then it doesn't matter if its a terrier or st bernard. Her dd would suffer injury in an attack from a dog of any size and this is so avoidable would her neighbours use their heads.
You really have my sympathies, op and I hope you have a happy and quiet New Year with a resolution to this problem soon.
Let's all have mongrels, oops sorry, cross breeds.
A breed has characteristics. Would you see a cop controlling a crowd with a cocker spaniel? Shall we see border control governed by a Yorkshire Terrier?
No of course not, so much nonsense is displayed here.
The control would be by a rotty or GSD, the nose provided by a spaniel or lab.
Akita, bull anything, ridgeback, rottweiler are all to me dangerous breeds. Yes they may be ok with your family but I have a darling dog to protect.
As for riding
