vicious dog

Options
i feel awful. Next door has a nasty dog (alsation x rottie). It snarls and headbutts and jumps at their living room window and tries to get out at you (we share a path so cant avoid it)they only have a single pane window and i can see it getting through there one day soon. It even snarls at people on the street that ive had no end of people saying to me how awful the dog is and how they wouldnt like to be in my shoes.I had a word with them as my LO is terrified and to be honest, it scares the hell out of me. I was told "its a bloody guard dog!" They said it jumps on a chair to get to the window but wont move the chair, They said they could muzzle it but they wont and they said they could lock it in the kitchen but they wont so i tried to have a word with people they pay their rent to and was told its none of their business so in the end i called RSPCA for advice who then contacted the police. The police are coming out to have a word with the owners - they know it will be me whose complained but i did try and get them to sort it. RSPCA said after so many warnings they will re-home the dog and if they cant it'll be put down. I feel awful - its not the dogs fault its the owners. Apprently they used to own a pub and its a pub guard dog - RSPCA said it doesnt belong in a two bed house when its that kind of guard dog. Next door told me it was nasty when they moved in and told me not to let my LO go near it and to watch on the back (it tends to jump our fence) Should i of done anything different?

  • when you say it is nasty, do you just mean it barks and looks aggressive - cos this may not mean it is actually likely to bite anyone.

Hopefully the rspca should assess him properly and advise his owners. It may be that with a bit of training his behaviour may no longer be an issue.

It snarls - teeth baring trying to bite through the window, it head butts to try and get out, scratches and goes nuts and the owners told me it is nasty and to not let my little girl near it as it'll "have her" .. he jumps over the fence at the back so tried to get a bigger fence (they moaned, said it didnt look right) so told them to put one up and they said they would but havent so far - something about they cant because it's winter?

It doesnt do it when the owners are in because they lock it up - when they go out they let it roam and this is when it is at the window so i dont understand why they wont lock it up when when they go out and let it roam when they're in. I feel bad for calling RSPCA because i dont think it has been mis treated its just a "proper" guard dog and i dont think it belongs in a domesticated environment but i dont know what else i could of done.

I'll be waiting on the bang on the door in the next few days with them throwing threats . . dont know them that well but they seem a bit hostile - got a right mouthful when i asked them to do something about the dog

One of my previous fosters was exactly the same, but that's only if you're not with her. She sounds/looks VERY agressive through a window, she does exactly the same as the dog you have described and when on a lead but she lives with a retired lady and her play mate every day is a 1 year old little boy. She's protective end of. She rolls around the floor with my children playing when we go to visit but goes crazy if she sees a teenager especially, she hates those when they are in the street! (But in her own home plays with children of all ages, 1-17)

How many people/children etc has this animal bitten that you have reported?

With guard dogs, my partners families guard dogs even attacked their owner when he decided to break into the garden after loosing his keys (drunk), but when not doing their job, my son used to ride on them basically, they were his toys almost when he was a baby/toddler playing with them.
One day I might be more organised...........
    GC: £200
Slinkies target 2018 - another 70lb off (half way to what the NHS says) so far 25lb
  • i've not reported it for biting but they had the police round the other day as it had gone for someone in the park (shouldnt off been on there anyway) every time it jumps our fence i grab my little one and run like mad to get inside it then spends ten minutes trying to get through our door. It was used as a guard dog and i know it thinks its guarding their proprty but i dont want it guarding mine and the rest of the street to! i dont think they can control it and they dont seem to be willing to do anything to help control it
  • Is it their fence? I would seriously consider altering the fence myself if I was concerned about the safety of a child. Even if it is not your fence, I would not risk the little ones safety over a point of principle - it may be as simple as fixing some trellis along the top of the fence. (Dogs are less likely to jump over a high wobbly fence than a solid wall, as it does not look strong enough to land/clamber on if needed!)

Perhaps if you offer to organise it the neigbours would pay (for all or some of it)?

I am not sure how much of a 'problem' the dog barking at the window is legally, but I would be concerned about any dog getting into a garden where a child may be playing, as both children and dogs can be unpredicatable.

we brought a fence to put on top of the fence already up to make it bigger and they came out shouting saying we were touching their property blah blah blah i explained why i was doing it and threy said theres a certain fence they want going up and knocked down the fence we put up. Asked when the fence was going up and they said summer.

The dog barking at the window isnt a problem as such - annoying yes but liveable - its what it will do when it gets through (and it will get through it just hasn't thrown the whole of its weight against it yet) if it does get out im screwed, ive got no where to run. Cant run to house as it'll be near door, can try and out run it but i very much doubt i could.

I think really the sooner the RSPCA or Police or whoever assess the situation the better, it's all very well having a barking dog but they have admitted it's a guard dog & warned you too, OP. Therefore to me they know it's dangerous & should be taking steps to make sure it's secure, if it were my dog i'd have the fence up & secured right away & wouldn't let it out in the garden unsupervised!

Hopefully the Police will have a word & warn them about it & tell them the steps they need to take to ensure it's safe, do you know when they're coming? I think the Police will also warn them not to harass you, but if they do just call them back! If they have a dog like that then people will want to be sure it's safe.
  • no they just said a beat bobby would be in touch - asked abut what would happen if they started lobbing threats about and they told me to call 999 if i felt i couldnt handle the situation (my OH works away, only me and DD at home whose 15 months old) they told me first day they moved in it was vicious and no end of people have complained to the housing authority about their dog - you can hear the windows rattling when its jumping against them and i doubt its coming for a fuss

That's scare anyone but especially when they've said it's a guard dog & you have your Daughter too. I hope they send someone who knows about dogs & will actually go in & assess it, not someone who'll look through the window & say it's fine! Could you record the dog when it's doing the window thing? Like on a mobile phone or anything? Just thinking it might help to show what it's like? I'd be on the phone daily until they came out to it, I had a neighbour from hell once so understand how it is. Don't give up keep calling them & demand they sort it. Personally i'd take a film/pics (If the Owners are out, don't risk them finding out they could kick off more) & go to the police station & refuse to budge till someone saw it & came back to see to the dog.

Hopefully the dogs not as bad as they make out, some people like to exaggerate, but don't take chances! I'd also stick up a wall or fence & if they remove it have them done for criminal damage too or whatever! Sorry to sound so worked up, it just annoys me when people have dogs meant for guarding in family environments, but more so when they threaten people about what it will do to them but do nothing to keep it secure!

i did think about recording the dog on my mobile but then my mum said they could say ive been antaganising the dog and thats why it barks and snarls and tried to snap lots so decided against this. Had a few people say they will speak to the beat bobby when he comes out so its not just my word against theirs. I think it would make an excellent guard dog for a factory or something like that but not in a family home and i dont want it to be taken away and shoved in a pound but dont want it to get out one day and get hold of DD - or anyone else
