Hi, I've had a slowcooker for 2 months now, best thing I ever bought. It gets used at least once a week. To be honest with you, so far I havent followed any proper recipes. I just chuck in whatever I fancy, meat, veg, tinned tomatos, stock cubes, herbs, bouillon (sp?) and I havent had any complaints so far. The whole family love it :j and with it being the 6.5 litre one we have, theres always a few (but not many) portions left over to freeze. I've even made soup in it, but was advised to cook the pulses before putting them in the slow cooker. One particular favourite recipe my OH made, had chicken breasts, carrots, turnip, onions, garlic, potatoes, celery and a tin of chicken soup, then topped up with vegetable stock, my daughter loved this one, and keeps asking us to make it again.

Congratulations on the new born, there are loads of things you can dow ith the slow cooker. I find it a much easier for making the likes of bolognese sauce which I then do spa bol, lasagne, canneloni etc, same with mince and gravy for cottage pie, with dumplings etc. Means we don't get bored of the same thing over and over and I get the ease of just popping everything in (usually when the boys are having breakfast, you might find nap time etc easier) and ready by tea time.

Then you will have hopefully plenty left over to freeze as ready meals for those days when cooking just doesn't appeal (I have 2 years between my boys and remember it well)

Aswell as the index on here if you google 'slow cooker recipe' it tends to come up with loads, I also tend to just put in what we have in now making my own up as I go along :) aswell as changing what I have seen recipes for so that it is more to our taste.

Did you get any recipes with your slowcooker?

We had one for Christmas (Morphy Richards) and in the manual there were lots of yummy recipes that I am already trying out.

At the moment I have a vegetable soup doing in the slow cooker, which will probably last the two of us several days.

I spotted some other recipes I wanted to try particularly Paprika Chicken and Beef in Red Wine Sauce, also going to adapt my own Spaghetti Bolognaise Recipe.

  • I have been using my SC for awhile now mostly Ham,or chicken and soups ,but have never thought to use it to make spag bol sauce .Do you brown the mince first before you chuck it in or can you put it in when red .i know this sounds like a daft question but I just spotted this thread and thought I'd ask

I brown the mince first, drain the fat off, then throw everything in but following a suggestion on here I now either use half quorn/veg mince, or the flavoured soya from Holland and Barrett with it, makes it go much further, is healthier and cheap too. Once it's been in the SC for a few hours DP the meat eater amongst us can't tell the difference :)
