Just came across details of a close to 1% cashback card...  First Trust Bank (NI).  (apologies if this is old news, but can't see it mentioned elsewhere here).

It's a Northern Irish bank, but can't see anything preventing you from applying from over here in GB... (unless I missed something... possible ;D)
[Edit 2/9/04 : Must be an existing First Trust customer :'(]

    Anyway have a look here:
    http://www.ftbni.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=FT_PersonalPortal/FT_Homepage&channel=FTHP
...select "Credit Cards" from the quick finder utility and then select the 'Option 1' card at the next screen.
It's not a true 1% cashback though... you get £50 back when you spend £5000 p.a., and then another £10 for every £1000 you spend above that.  For my purposes anyway that is close enough to 1%  :)

Admitedly if you don't spend more than £5k p.a. on your card then you will get nowt.  But provided you spend over £5k p.a., the very worst you could do is get 0.83% cashback (spend £5999 and get £50 cashback).
Only just came across this 5 mins ago, so not had time to check it out in detail or apply yet... got to get back to work now anyway  :( , but hope to have a chance to read the small print before the weekend...
Ah! Good old trusty beer... I hope you never change.

Just on the AMEX reduction, it's well worth pointing out that this only reduces annual cashback by £10, so it's not quite as bad as it seems on the face of it.

Oh yes, I was in a hurry and didn't notice that you had to be an exisiting First Trust customer.
Oh well, probably going to be the Conran card then.

  • Just got a letter from AMEX state:
All spend up to £3,000 will earn you 0.5% MoneyBack.
All spend from £3,001 to £7,500 will earn you 1% MoneyBack.
All spend over £7,501 will earn you 2% MoneyBack.
well they now pay less but comparing to most of cards especialy those use it every where , AMEX pay more than the rest.

Remeber Egg - came down from 1% to 0.1%.
remeber Capital One Rebate - came down from 1% to 0.5%.
    and more ...
All of them done it few months ago, sp it took to AMEX few months and the done it as well.

Don't throw it so quickly, what is the alternative?

Learn from the mistakes of others - you won't live long enough to make them all yourself.
  • Well at least Amex have finally clarified their ambigous T&C by explicitly stating that the "MoneyBack" is in 3 bands.

I'm one of the lucky people with a capital one card that stayed at 1%. But I only got the card on 4th Aug after applying on 18th May (is that a record for the slowest application I wonder?). So I haven't got much time to build up the cash before it is paid in January.

My question is about the timing of the cashback and what it includes. Their T&C says it will be paid in Jan 2005 in a method that they choose. My first statement has a current cashback total on it. I assume the next ones will too. Does this mean that as my statement date is the 7th, all purchases from Dec 7th-Jan 7th will also count towards the cashback for 2004 paid in Jan 2005? Or only those from Dec 7th-Dec 31st? Or (worst of all) is the cut-off the last full statement of 2004, the one covering Nov 7th-Dec 7th? If I am to break the habit of a lifetime and start my xmas shopping before Dec 20th I would prefer to know before it's too late :D

(I'll ask capital one too, but posted here in case anyone knows offhand)

Depends what your spend is. If you are able to spend up to £10k on AMEX then the Platinum remains the best (£309.97 cashback on £20k working out at about 1.55% cashback, and £109.97 cashback on £10k working out at about 1.10%).

Next best up to £7.5k is AMEX blue (£64.99 cashback on £7.5k working out at 0.87% cashback).

If you are looking for a non AMEX card then the Accucard works out at 0.8% cashback.

There is also the Conran card run by MBNA (look at the article on cashback CCs for more details).

There is also the Bank of Northern Ireland CC which is 0.5% cashback up to £3k, then anything over at 1%.

  • Chasing the best cashback is turning into a joke - just received a letter from accucard (fourth cashback card this year) to tell me that my card should arrive in the next few days and that cashback will fall to 0.5% from 1st November. D'oh >:(
