Digital TV Cost Cutting Article - Discuss What You've Been Offered

I cancelled my Virgin TV XL pack last week(£25.50). I got a phone call today saying I had been with them for a long time etc and what could they do? I said I had paid £20 last year and wanted the same deal I could get with Sky (£20.50).
They will give me £30 off (£5 a month) to cover the next 6 months and then give me a call to renegotiate, depending on what deals are available.
So I am paying £20.50 for XL package which is what I asked for in the first place.0 -
During January 2009 I called to remove the £10pm HD charge. In addition I asked to cancel Movies and Sports packages, to revert to a basic TV package (and the SkyTalk and Broadband mid that we have had for some time).
Sky offered 50% off the cost of the Movies and Sports packages for 3 months (which they called a 'credit crunch offer', which I accepted and they actioned immediately. However I don't think they are worth even that to me so I'll probably call back to cancel again.
The SkyHD box has been very unreliable compared to the previous SkyPlus box, with frozen pictures, lost recordings, de-activated signal inputs etc. We were about to dump it when I came across (on ebay) a Power Supply Unit fix which supposedly fixes these issues - as I last resort I'm about to try this (£25 direct). Watch this space!0 -
Oh I forgot to say
I'm now enjoying up to the minute movies just as soon as they are released and not have to wait for them to finish on box office first before finally coming on to sky movies.........0 -
Thought I would let you know my upgrade deal with SKY thanks to this information.
My old box standard digibox broke down (stuck on standby) and after trying all the internet advice I could find I gave in. Rang Sky on Sunday (25th Jan) and asked to upgrade to Sky+, they quoted me £199 plus £60 installation, after reading Haggling advice on this website I rang to cancel last night and was initially offered Sky+HD box for £49 with obvious extra monthly cost for this service, I told them I did not have an HD TV so they then offered Sky+ box at same price plus £30 installation A SAVING OF £180! Once this was agreed and confirmed I asked why it was that I was quoted £259 on Sunday and now £79, he said the offer had just come out today (yeah likely story), but hey great news for me and thank you to Martin and his readers who post these items.

To be fair to Sky, it probably was a new offer, given the fact the hd box was £49, they can hardly offer you a box with less capability (hd wise) for more money. Having said that its on their website at £99 for new customers.
As you say though, good news for you.0 -
I'm looking for a bit of advice on the best tactics to use in this situation...
I had Sky TV with Sky Sports, but once the season of the sport I watch finished I cancelled Sky Sports. I also have Base broadband (currently free but going up to £5 per month in March; I'm in a contract with BT so I can't switch my phone to Sky Talk at the moment).
The new season of the sport I watch is about to start & so I'd like to reactivate Sky Sports. I'd like to save some money if possible, but I'm concerned that if I ring & ask to cancel, they may just offer a deal for staying on the basic TV package, when the only reason I have Sky TV is to watch Sky Sports.
Do you think mentioning that I want to add Sky Sports but don't feel that I can afford it, & therefore don't really need Sky TV at all, would work? I could also mention the impending price rise for their broadband, although this is still cheaper than other providers & if I cancel Sky TV completely I won't be able to have Sky broadband!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.0 -
It could well be the new prices that came into immediate effect when announced on Wednesday 29th Jan 2009.It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0

Have full Sky package. Told them things are tight and Sky tv my only form of entertainment. Got 25% off for 12 months. I am happy with that.0

currently have sky broadband, calls and all the basic tv channels (not sport or movies). told them my basic box was on the blink - they offered me a service call and free box replacement. Said I wanted freeview + - was told it was £79 for sky+ or HD for £49. Said no to HD as I don't have a HD TV. Eventually got 12 months line rental and calls for free, sky+ and installation for £49 and £30 cashback on my account.
Happy with that - the free line rental etc has more than paid for the sky+ box.0 -
Hi - just got sky + as a new customer but quoted the moneysavingexpert offer that was previously withdrawn and they honoured it so didn't get charged for the box or installation and half price on monthly rental. Also got £50 m&s vouchers. Not sure if it was quoting the money saving link that had expired or because they had to meet targets on last day of the month but thanks for the tip, worth haggling!0
