Digital TV Cost Cutting Article - Discuss What You've Been Offered

I am newly skyless having cancelled when I just got so sick of all the 'dancing around our handbags' involved in trying to get good value from them. What's interesting is that since I cancelled I've had a call every single day, at exactly the same time, from Sky. Unfortunately, I only know about this through my caller display since the calls always come through during the day and, amazing I know, I'm out at work then! Apparently, the technology of answerphones is beyond Sky. I've called back a couple of times (using say no to 0870 numbers) but the operators have no idea why I've been called as there is no note on my account and the calls are coming from a 'different department' and there is no communication between the two! Clearly they want to make me an offer and I might, indeed, be open to that offer. However, despite calling daily since I cancelled five weeks ago, they don't seem to have registered that it might be an idea to call at a different time.
It is just this sort of ineptness that made me cancel in the first place and, frankly, it freeview isn't so bad! So if you do cancel, be prepared for endless 'silent calls'!0 -
Hi all, we are currently on the basic Sky 6 mixers for £21 per month deal and are looking to upgrade to Sky+. I have heard that they £10 sub fee will cease come 1st July, but wondered if the cost for the actual box will then go up. I have no idea how to best get an upgrade without paying a huge amount for the actual equipment. Any ideas would be more than welcome!0

hi surf
i did just that said i wanted a new later model box for sky anytime and got one and got them as part of the package to move my existing sky+ box upstairs replacing my old standard multiroom box (which i pay for at £10 month)
give it a go threaten to cancel if not thats what i did whilst being very nice chatty and polite!!
good luck debs
Which Dept did you speak to to ask for that - my current sky+ box is 5 years old and lots of recordings dont work anymore so an excuse to get a new box would be great0 -

Try 08700248973 - Cancellations dept
Threaten to cancel and see what happens - Apparently weds/thurs are best days
My advice would be to do it soon as they may raise prices once the sub stops in July0 -
Thanks DpK, will give that a try on Wednesday this week.0

I phoned up Virgin Media today, telling them its time I upgraded my services as I was paying for basic tele, 4megs broadband and phone £41
So I asked what can they do for me and what I ended up with was
digital tele
phone xl (24/7 unlimited calls)
broadband xl (up to 20megs)
for £36.95
I was initially offered digital tele xl for £44 but thought I didnt need all those channels.
Ive just checked the channel listings and saw I could of done with it, for an extra £7 a month, its sure is worth it.
So no min 12month contract either, simply upgrade to services, I could of got all 3 xl for £44, doh!
I may ring up and ask if I can still get it for £44
but cant complain for £36.95
cant wait for my faster download speeds. Its pretty quick at the moment, no complaints as yet with 4megs.
They also have some 400mins on phone where u can call international/mobiles and landlines. Im gonna fone them up and see what deals they can do for me if I take that on. And if its around a tenner or little more, then I will ditch Virgin mobile (£10 for 300mins/300text) in favour of this.:hello:

Shopping Tips
Don't spend five pounds to dry clean a shirt. Donate it to the charity shop instead. They'll clean it and put it on a hanger. Next morning buy it back for two pounds.0 -
not sure if this is the best place to post this, but nevertheless I will give it a go. I currently havve Virgin Large Tv and M broadband 20gbp per month, i want to now go for the V+ service, but I have seen 2 different prices on the web 100gbp plus 5 per month and 150 plus 5 per month.
Secondly if I go via quidco, will I get the 50gbp cashback for ordering the v+ service.
ThanksPiggy Points (started 27/04/07) 2115
Quidco (started 27/04/07) £17.82
Comping Challenge £0/£180
May Grocery Challenge £108.76/£2200 -
SKY HD £199 Free Install & 10% off package for three months.
I have declined but the chap on the phone will ring me back when a better offer comes in.
Apparently the accounts page on their computer has an offer based on time with SKY etc.
I notice this week SKY have taken adverts out criticising Virgin for offering existing customers a worse deal than new customers. Seems like this may be a useful bargaining tool if existing customers fancy any of the "new customers only" deals that may be about.0 -
Rang them on 01506 831783 (alternative to 08702 404040 for customer services (thanks www.saynoto0870.com forum)). Told them I wanted to cancel subscription as I was getting a freeview PVR. Their response was that I wouldn't get the same choice of channels. I replied that I was more interested in the recording facility but didn't want to pay £159 for SKY plus. Immediately offered brand new SKY plus box for £49 with free installation. Told them I knew they were offering free boxes to returning customers and was told they were refurbished boxes and I could have that deal if I wanted. Asked about warranty and was told full 12 months on either so I've gone for the refurb one.
Started off with no SKY plus and an old box that's out of warranty. Finished up with SKY plus and a new old box (does that make sense?) with a 12 month warranty. Total cost 5p for the phone call.
Also during the same call I've dropped down from the 6 mix to the 4 mix saving £3 per month, never watched all the channels anyway.
Result. :jSometimes you're the statue, sometimes you're the pigeon.0 -
I rang Sky yesterday after reading this thread. I have been paying £37 per month for the family package, plus £10 per month for some movie/sports channels which I haven't watched but was offered when I got my Sky+ box instead of the £10 per month. I told them I wanted to renegotiate my package and get rid of the movie/sports channels, and after a bit of a wait got put through to another department, and a lovely lady who looked at the account, messed about with it and reduced my payment to £21 per month w.e.f. 1st July. What a result - £16 per month saving! She also gave me a trial package of all of the movie channels for £1 per month until September, which seems like a bargain, I'll record a few onto dvd and make good use of that, I'll probably have enough movies saved to last me for ever!
I also tried to get them to upgrade my Sky+ box to the one with the 80gb hard drive (mine is an early version I think, only 40 mb). Told them I wanted to use Sky Anytime and pleaded, but got nowhere! They want £159 for a new box, but she told me it wasn't worth having (honest answer anyway!). But if anyone can advise how I can pester them for a new box, in a way which works, I'll be really grateful.
Used the number in the previous post to call them, it worked fine although I probably got through to the wrong department to start with, they did transfer me quickly to the right one..
Many many thanks moneysavers!!
