Hiya.
This is a crazy-long topic. Shouldn't these be separate topics in a "consumer rights" forum?
Anyhoo. I just bought a phone-line, over the phone, from BT. It's a 12-month contract. There were a couple of things I found difficult to digest in the Terms & Conditions that they read to me, and I was wondering if someone could tell me what my rights are?
1. Firstly, there isn't a satisfaction period. From the moment I gave her my account details over the phone, as far as I can tell, I am bound into the 12-month contract with no hope of escape. This doesn't seem entirely fair, as I have no idea at the time of entering into the contract whether the service will be satisfactory. Surely the same rights as online goods should apply? I would expect to have at least 7 days from being connected to cancel the contract free of charge (apart from paying for what I actually used in that time).
2. Second. I got a "12 month renewable contract" - which apparently means that the contract automatically renews at the end of 12 months - if I don't remember to cancel the contract in the 30 days preceeding the renewal (in this case 18th August 2009 - 17th September 2009). In which case I would have to pay the whole 12 months line-rental to cancel it. This doesn't seem very fair either. Why can't I tell them right now that I don't want it renewed? This is using devious means to try to bind me into paying them more money for a service I won't use. That's got to be illegal.
If anyone knows anything about either of these issues, could you please let me know?

The retailer is liable under the Sale of Goods Act. Actually, you will have no problem with Argos with getting the items replaced. They are excellent on customer service, particularly as you have the receipts.
Regards,
Art.
I agree, I had a rice cooker/steamer/slow cooker by Tefal from Argos and it stopped working just a couple of weeks before the guarantee period ended. I seriously thought I would have to go through all the rigmarole of it being sent to the manufacturer, with ensuing lengthy delays - but no! On arriving at Argos customer service point, they just looked at the receipt and got me a new one straight away. They really know how to treat customers :T:T:T.Some people hear voices, some see invisible people. Others have no imagination whatsoever

Hi I posted about the Coast dress.
Does anyone know if I have to accept the straps or do they have to give me a refund?
My daughter can't wear the dress without straps.
I'm no expert, but I would have thought that this would come under the Sale and Supply of Goods Act, because at £90 you would expect the dress to be able to be worn more than once. It sounds very much like a design flaw where the plastic fastenings are concerned. I would contact Consumer Direct on [strike]08454 04 05 06[/strike] see post (1538) below and ask their advice.
I suppose you could agree to take the straps, but state in writing that if the next lot go the same way, then obviously the dress in not fit for the purpose.
Good luck! Some people hear voices, some see invisible people. Others have no imagination whatsoever

hi just wondered if u can help my friend bought a condenser tumble dryer from argos feb 08 for the past 2 weeks it has been tripping all her electrics she got an electrician out checked house electrics plugged all electrical items in one at a time definatly tumble dryer phoned argos connected to many different people when she got to speak to someone from indeset they have told her they will only repair even though it is less than a year old
Your friend's contract is with Argos, not Indesit, so I would go back to them and ask what they propose. You would expect a tumble dryer to last longer than 7 months without breaking down.
Ask the electrician, but I suspect this might also be a fire risk - so it would be worth having the electrician to put that in writing to submit to Argos. Some people hear voices, some see invisible people. Others have no imagination whatsoever

Aw thanks for that Derrick, I apologise for my ignorance on that. In fact I have been phoning the 0845 number myself over a problem I'm about to post about - so I'll definitely look up that number to use for my next phone call .
I'm sure you can appreciate, in such a long thread it's difficult to keep track of every useful post, but I'm adding the number for my region to my phone directory now. Some people hear voices, some see invisible people. Others have no imagination whatsoever

Anyone got a clue?0 -
1. Not sure what satisfaction you expect from a phone line, it will either work or not ? , you should get a letter from BT stating you can cancel within 7 days i know i did when i signed up last month
2. BT Write to you near your contract end and ask if you wish to renew as far as im aware0 -
hi,
I took out a contract phone with onestopphoneshop in april, part of the package was a free beko tv, which arrived 28 days later as promised.
I filled out the guarantee and sent off as normal.
The problem now is the tv is faulty (the screen has no picture, only sound), so I contacted Beko who said the guarantee was worthless as they have no contract with onestop!
So I phoned onestop, and was told to call back in a couple of days and they'll see what they can do.
As the tv is only 5 months old I'm sure 1 of them has a responsibilty to sort it out, just want to make sure i get the right guys incase they try and wriggle out of it!
thanksi am pleased to report your i.q test came back negative0 -
Hello,
Please can someone give me a little bit of advice in regards to a MFI order.
I ordered a kitchen and bathroom from MFI about 3 weeks ago through their 'slate' finance plan. My kitchen is due for delivery at the end of October but my bathroom is due next Tuesday!
I have since heard so many horror stories about them i would like to cancel my order.
Do i have the right to do this and get a full refund??
Any advice would be useful0
